The advances in personalised treatment for cancer sufferers based on the genetic testing of tumours will require a rethink from health care providers, says Professor Alan Ashworth.
Prof Ashworth, chief executive of the Institute of Cancer Research, said that the medical profession should admit that established methods used to combat diseases such as lung and pancreatic cancers "had essentially failed".
He was speaking after it was revealed that all patients will soon be able to have their tumour?s DNA, its genetic code, sequenced, enabling doctors to ensure they give exactly the right drugs to keep the disease at bay.
