hi I was currently taking slow release metformin 1 in the morning and 2 in the evening. visited my diabetic nurse last week and my sugar levels although have come down slightly are still very high. I own have to take 2 tablets in the morning and 2 in the evening. she has also given me a monitor to check my levels at home. no matter how good it am with eating my levels are still high averaging between 12-17 feeling really disheartened. she did explain if they continue to be high I will be given another medication which drops my sugar levels quickly but carnt remember the name

Welcome
It might be glizocide I think that's how you spell it.
Sorry to hear your having a hard time of it.

also getting confused took a sugar test on one hand and it was 18 thought it was a bit high considering I had only eaten roast dinner so took another one on separate hand and it was 14 so really don't know which to record

Tracy wondering how long you've been diagnosed...what were your levels to start...and what they are now...would be easier to make suggestions & offer some advice if you gave that information...if you would prefer not to...that's understandable...it can take some time to get your Blood Glucose (BG) under control...that was one of the best pieces of advice I received when I arrived on the forum 7 months ago...the second was testing...I see your DSN has provided a meter...so no doubt you willing be testing...have you tried testing before...one way to tell what effect the food you are eating has on your BG...it's not clear from your post how much experience you have...what level of support you have experienced...or possibly how little?

Tracy just responded to your first post...if you can give a little information it would help...have you been told when to test...how to test?

hI had gestational diabetes 18 years ago. was always warned it would come back. officially diagnosed November bloods came back as 97. so was given metaformin 1 in morning 2 at night after meals. went back to nurse last week and slightly down to 89 now have to take 2 tablets in morning and 2 at night. have to test my bloods before each meal and 2 hours after eating. used to taking my bloods as I had to do this when I was pregnant. just carnt seem to bring them down last night I had a ham salad and was still above 13 on the meter . today I test 19 on one hand but 14 on the other just wanted to test it twice as I thought it was quite high

Tracy...those numbers are high...but not so high they are not manageable...I started off with higher levels...worked on them gradually...managed to get them to the point my next HbA1c review should indicate I am back to non-diabetic levels...or almost there...however it's taken me approximately me ten months to get there...its never a good idea to rush...I understand your DSN's concern...however you have to find a balance...adjust your diet./lifestyle at your own pace...or it won't be sustainable...as for getting different results from different hands...I shouldn't worry about that...it happens to all of us...there is no particular reason...just one of those things...maybe start off with a test as soon as you are awake...this will give you a starting point to build on...then before breakfast...as said 2 hours after breakfast...some foods easily tolerated by one type 2 can and do spike BG levels of another...where the testing comes in...a case of experimenting...are you active?...I'm not the most active person...I walk the dog...gradually increased...great effect on my levels...also a book I read Type 2 Diabetes The First Year by Gretchen Becker...so much useful information...easy to read...she is a type 2 diabetic...who takes you through her first year month by month...this forum is a godsend...no doubt others will offer support & advice...as much as you need...stress also impacts on your levels...don't let yourself be pressurised into increasing medication if you are not happy to do that...clearly if your are at risk...it may be necessary...but you have some time before your next review...you can make a difference...even if your HbA1c is not back within the guidelines...as long as you make progress you may persuade your DSN with gradual improvements...to wait for your next review before increasing medication.

Sounds like you might need the healing touch of insulin if Metformin isn't working, it sounds like your pancreas isn't up to much, Tracey. My mum had gestational diabetes. Baby brother popped out, at home I might say, weighing 10lbs 7oz. Later events proved she was Type 1, so gestational diabetes is no guarantee you are Type 2. You might ask your nurse if they are certain you are Type 2 before things get much further. I'm not saying you're not, but it's worth asking the question now rather than wait another 6 months of high blood sugars.

I feel your pain, I struggle to get my bg into single figures. My waking averages are regularly around 13 -15. I am hoping now I am starting to do more exercise I will see a bit more of a drop.

Hope you get those numbers down.

thank you all for your advice and support I suppose like all of us you just get a bit deflated maybe be a bit more strict with diet and improve on hardly any exercise she is telephoning me tomorrow to see how I got on with the testing so will have a chat x
