I may be purchasing horses this year and with them, either a self-drive lorry or trailer. I've had a look on the DVLA site but can't see whether a T1 on a 3 year restricted licence is allowed to tow a trailer? Can anyone point me in the right direction please? 🙂

Think it depends on the date you got your 'car' licence and in any event, it all depends on the weight of said trailer as to what category licence anyone requires.

See, some horseboxes when empty will be under 3500kgs so OK on a 'Car' licence - but once you load the geegee(s) they would be overweight. Plus at that size, axle weights come into the equation!

Thanks Jenny. I've had my licence since 2006 and the trailer I'm considering weighs 1000kg. The type of horses i'm considering buying (typically) weigh 480 - 500kg if they're healthy/in good shape. So two of those is another 1000kg. It's all the variables that are doing my head in!! >.<

Says on back of licence what you can drive, check letters & numbers online to see what categories your licence covers.

Would the helpline know @Sprogladite?

Or maybe call DVLA themselves?

All the information you need is online at Gov.UK. Just search towing with a trailer. You have to have a valid car driving licence. It makes no difference whether your licence is restricted to 3 year renewal.

Whichever way you do it, it’s illegal to tow a trailer the is more than the weight of the towing vehicle. You need a C1 licence for that.
