Bearing in mind that 1 gram of fat has 9 calories, 1 gram of carb has 4 cals and 1 gram of protein has 4 cals.

The traditional recommendation was for 2000 cals for a woman and 2500 for a man. In a Low Glycemic Index, Mediterranean style diet with...

45 to 60 % of cals from carbs depending on level of physical activity and work done.
Upto 35% of cals from fats including 25% from 'good fats'.
10-20% of cals from protein.

That was the recommendation of both DiabetesUK and the NHS until very recently. If that diet produced good control then all well and good. If not you walked up through the quantity and quality of meds available until good control was established on that diet.

Interestingly Prof Taylor's diet which has received a lot of recent publicity mimics this diet with 53% of cals recommended from carbs.
