David Cameron says there is still a "long way to go" to raise standards of care in the NHS in England.

The prime minister's concession comes after a series of critical reports and ahead of the findings of a public inquiry into care at Stafford Hospital.

Mr Cameron said he wanted to make improving care one of his top priorities for 2013.

But he insisted progress was being made, pointing to new initiatives that were being rolled out.

He highlighted a the new "friends and family" test starting in April and the extra ward rounds being put in place.

Well generally speaking Alan, locally anyway, the actual medical care I've had and have seen other family members have, has been between OK and excellent.

However it then falls apart. Meals are pretty disgusting (very small amounts of protein and little veg, no fruit unless you like apples) with little choice - you can have whatever is left on the trolley when it gets to you, they've stopped the ordering thing. How the hell anyway do you know what you'll be able to either manage or fancy tomorrow, when you are ill?
