A Cambuslang family whose daughter nearly died just days before Christmas are warning others to be aware of the dangers of diabetes.
Bethany Paterson (15) was rushed to Yorkhill Hospital on December 17, suffering from diabetic ketoacidosis, a potentially life-threatening condition.
Just two days before that, she’d been in the Gartnaval having her tonsils removed, after doctors failed to spot her medical problems were down to diabetes.
Diabetic ketoacidosis is caused by a shortage of insulin. In response the body switches to burning fatty acids and producing acidic ketone bodies.
