Hi ladies (if you are a man reading this hang your head in shame, tut tut 😛)

I've never actually paid attention to what my sugar levels do at *certain* times of the month, but have noticed over the last few days that I'm a good few points higher on average throughout the day (ie ranging in the 7-9's rather than 5-7's which is my norm). If this is what I think it is then I'm concluding that for the week before that time my readings will rise slightly.

Have any of you noticed a rise and what do you do to combat it? I'm on a Roche accuchek pump so have 2 options 1)use a TBR - I don't think I can program that for 7 days (anyone any ideas on maximum time you can set a TBR for?) so will prob need to reset a few times or 2)use the bolus calculator on the pump which allows you to factor in a % amendment (originally titled 'premenstrual') for each bolus you give (in which case I'd need a % increase).

thanking you!!

Yep, my numbers run several points higher throughout aunty's visits but there's nowt much I can do about it. I tried increasing my insulin and ended up hypo. Fortunately I'm almost at the end of my shelf life now and the last visit was the first in 10 months so hopefully there won't be any more.

Or you could go on Depo-provera injections and remove the problem altogether! :D

Lee Lee,

just wiki'd depo provera and seen that it's not recommended for those with diabetes over 20 years! also, the side effects that are listed as common are pretty scary!!

Also, I'm currently on Yasmin as I have PCOS (thanks again, diabetes) and not sure whether the DP would treat that like the Yasmin does.....

I don't run that much higher but I crave sugar like crazy.

LeeLee, I'd love the injection but my gp won't switch me to it from the pill. He says the pill is safer or a coil :s

I'd query that... I was on it for years post diagnosis, albeit as T2. They only changed me to the tablet version once I hit 45 because there's a small increased risk of osteoporosis.

My sugars run high just before THAT time of the month, and then are lower during my period... it's a pain in the neck but nothing I've tried seems to remedy it as if I do more insulin when high then it drops too quickly and if reduce insulin when low then it spikes and then crashes. Apparently it's normal for our hormones to affect our sugars (think about stress!) but if anyone has a magic solution I'm all ears 😉 oh, and I don't crave sugar but am starving and need to distract myself from raiding the fridge! We are wanting to start a family (waiting for the dreaded hba1c to come down!!) so dread to think what pregnancy will do!!!

xx

Dory - there is a really really easy way of dealing with this on a pump!

Basal pattern 2 !!! (or 3 or 4 or 5 depending on how may you currently have) and on day whatever of your cycle, swap to it. When you get to day whatever it is you change back to normal again, swap back to Basal pattern 1.

Hi - I too am on Depo- have been for 20 odd years with no problems. Last year they took me off it temporarily - but then I found out it was purely due to cost and got myself put straight back on it.
I am T2 though so not sure if it makes a difference.

hi guys and thanks for the comments. I'm definitely tempted to do a basal rate switch. Will need ot leave it this month to see how it pans out then will try and change it for next month.

Hi Dory

Only just saw this but yes, levels run slightly higher and because it's hormonal and lasts for a few days, temp basal better than ratios. Mine only lasts for 24 hours though so I would look into that basal 2 set up post pregnancy.....

...... If I wasn't going to phase them out with an implanon as soon as I can after sprog! I vd had depo and prefer the implant, mostly because of how horrifically long it took my periods to come back when I was on the depo and decided I wanted a baby (a year) - that build-up / lag in your system doesn't feel healthy to me.

My totm goes like this

Day 1 and 2 hypo day -10%
Day 3 to day 12 normal
Day 12-15 ish ovulation +20% for a day or so
Day 16 to 24 +10%
Day 24 to 28 +20%

I know where I am from my diary and when I have done a couple of meal corrections.
I have four basals set on my pump. It's pain when you need to make changes but it does seem to work. If I am feeling lazy I just set a tbr for 24 hours before I go to bed.

I have to tell you my dsn thinks this is all a bit over the top but it works for me.

How is it over the top when it's your body? It's a shame men don't understand it all!
The pill im on means my cycle can last 3+ weeks & I only correct when i have sweets but saying that I'm not looking forward to when I'm next on given how hit & miss my bloods are
