HEALTH chiefs are rallying behind calls for minimum pricing on alcohol after research suggested it would save lives and reduce crime in Cheshire West.

A minimum price of 50p per unit was introduced in Scotland in May 2018 and the same policy will be rolled out across Wales in March – but plans for the levy in England were rejected back in 2013.

Now, research from the University of Sheffield suggests that if the charge was introduced in Cheshire West, there would be 253 fewer crimes a year and 103 deaths prevented in the first 20 years.

The reason why it will not be considered in England, despite the fact that alcohol related health crises have reduced in Scotland since the change, is this: in Parliament, there are subsidised bars. Private clubs are not exempt from the Scottish legislation. I doubt English MPs will vote for anything that makes their liquid lunches more expensive.

It’s not something that could be introduced in local areas, it has to be National for what I would have thought were obvious reasons.
