A LEADING diabetes charity is calling for 24-hour specialist teams to be based at the Horton General Hospital to reduce the risk of foot amputations.

Diabetes UK has written to the chief executive of the Oxford University Hospitals (OUH) NHS Trust, which manages the Horton, requesting a meeting to discuss multi-disciplinary footcare teams (MDT), made up of specialists with relevant skills.

The charity said having teams in place to ensure quick referrals can reduce amputation rates in diabetics who develop foot or leg ulcers and although there is an MDT at the Horton, it does not offer 24-hour care.
