The California Supreme Court is poised to rule today on one of the most emotional issues currently before it: whether school employees should be able to give insulin shots to diabetic students if a nurse is not available.

The case pits parents who want voluntarily trained, non-nursing staff and faculty to give the shots to their children against a nurses union claiming that inappropriately administered shots could lead to harm and even tragedy.

The parents are backed by the American Diabetes Association, which brought the case to the high court after two lower courts in Sacramento ruled that state law mandates only licensed professionals may administer the shots.

Lets hope they make the only sensible decision!

It would be interesting to know how many nurses had given the wrong dosage over a set time. Human error plays a major part in life.
Come to think of it how many people that self administer their own insulin have messed up? :D

Exactly!

And it would be extremely harmful for these children NOT to have their insulin, so that's really not an option.

State high court rules schools must provide insulin shots for diabetic students

Schools with diabetic students ? that would be nearly every public school in California ? received a mandate from the state Supreme Court on Monday to provide students with the insulin shots they are entitled to under the Americans with Disabilities Act, regardless of whether a nurse is on campus.

While school nurses argued that insulin legally must be administered only by licensed health care providers, the court disagreed and found that California law permits ?trained, unlicensed personnel? to administer prescription medication under a doctor?s orders, including insulin, the drug used in treating diabetes.

Yay! A good decision for once.

There are some lovelly teacher about but get a class of 30 kids acting themselves & being unruly. A teacher is meant to be a teacher. Wouldnt let my child life to be given to a person who wasnt trained. To easy 😱

It doesn't have to be a teacher (nor should it be), and whichever member(s) of school staff look after the child, they would receive training. Without this ruling, schools were able to exclude type 1 children unless they had a qualified nurse on the premises, which is just ridiculous. I'm not a qualified nurse, yet I'm perfectly capable of caring for a child's diabetes after having appropriate training 🙂

That's good to hear that a sensible decision was made

Shame something like this isn't followed in the uk to help younger diabetics who don't fully understand their diabetes (where parents have to administer insulin & check blood sugars)
