Hi

I've just read that caffefine can raise blood sugar levels. I always assumed that coffee and tea were ok to have (with a small amount of milk). However my blood sugar tends to rise late morning and is quite noticeable if I have a late lunch.

Has anyone experienced this as well?

I think that, because caffeine is a stimulant it can cause release of stress hormones cortisol and adrenalin - these in turn then stimulate the liver to release extra glucose, thus raising your levels. A cup doesn't tend to have much effect on me.

There's been a discussion about this on another D forum. It appears some people find that 'real' coffee increases their BG but the instant variety doesn't appear to.

I guess it depends how much you drink!

There was a thing on the telly recently where they were comparing the amount of caffeine in some Starbucks/Costa/Nero cups and it was quite dangerously high! 😱

I'm a tea drinker, just have one cup of instant in the afternoon when I'm flagging a bit 🙂

I changes a long while a go to decaf & herbals etc. now if I do have a coffee while i'm out & forget to ask for decaf. I get hyperactive. I even find an odd chocolate has the saem effect.😉
I don't drink instant as it tends to have too much pottasium, I have to watch my levals. (Renal problems)

Goodness me I could' believe just how much is in some of the coffees, no wonder they make me buzzzzzzzz.
Thanks for the link.

I don't drink tea or coffee, but I do from time to time drink sugar free caffeine drinks...would these raise my levels? I have basically stopped drinking them when my gym instructor told me why they speed up your metabolism! 😱

I haven't noticed an effect on my BG and I drink quite a lot, up to 5 cups maximum......

I also dont get a noticeable effect from caffeine, like not being able to sleep...........and I thought it was something to do with the Diabetes, but from the rest of you it seems not........🙂

I would imagine that caffeine in any for would have an effect, particularly if levels are high as in Red Bull etc.

Hi

I came across this awhile back & although my BP in healthy range (120/70 when checked in January) I was keen to avoid it increasing. Anyway I drink a lot of tea in the office and very little at home so I've changed to decaf in the office & when I need more t-bags at home I'll change them as well.

I also drink green/white tea at home so no idea if these have caffeine in them

I don't tend to drink coffe as it tends to put my teeth on edge and they feel really uncomfortable.

I cannot say that I have noticed any direct impact on my BS from drinking Caffeine.

I have noticed however that "water" appears to have an impact.

For example at work on a normal desk based day I have a constant supply of water and my BS, say at lunch time for example, will be where I expect it to be.

If I do not have that constant supply of water, then more often than not my lunchtime BS will be significantly lower.

Is it the lack of water that causes this?

It could be that I've had one cup of tea less or it could be that the reason for the lack of water is playing its part - attending a training course, sitting in a meeting.....

Its all too complex.

Why can't the scientists concentrate on finding positive aspects - for example the air you breathe on the Algarve provides a better basis for consistent BS control than that in London. NICE could then recommend that the government pays for us to become ex-pats:D

Could be that you are becoming dehydrated and this is affecting it (same glucose, but in less blood - not sure how scientific that is!).

I know what you mean about all this depressing research - when I put on the daily headlines in the News section I often feel really miserable by the end of it, why can't we have more good news?!!!! 😉

funny i noticed the other day with a new brand of coffee called rocket fuel that my sugars went very high after drinking.... ordinairily i dont notice anything and i drink proper coffee although home made and no effect
