To anyone who has experience in this, especially Cave Troll...

I contacted DVLA to try and get category C1 put back on my licence. I originally had it as passed test in early ninieties and they removed it when I advised them of my insulin requirement!

I have started the process to try and get it back on.

They sent me medical examination report D4, to be completed by my doctor (& optician) I sent that off also with form D2 and DIABC1.

I have now heard back and they want more!

They say I must now obtain a medical report from a hospital consultant, and I must have the last 3 months of BG readings with me when I meet the consultant.

The form for the consultant to fill out is form C1EXAM3 (form C1EXAM2 is an explanatory letter addressed to the cinsultant!)

To be honest the questions on C1EXAM3 seem fine.

I also have to fill out the reply form CLE10151 within 21 days or my application will be cancelled!

So I guess I'd like to know what you think have I got past the first hurdle and this next one is just a formality?

Do the hospital consultants also charge money for such a appointment?

Will I have to do this yearly, would I have to fill out all the medicals & forms and meet with a hospital consultant and pay money?

I'd really appreciate your thoughts as it's been bugging me for a while!

I don't need C1 but find it useful, am generally healthy and only at end of first year on diabetes and have good control (touch wood)

Any thoughts greatly appreciated

My understanding is that if you are a diabetic on insulin a standard car/motorcycle licence (Groups B and A) can be issued for any period upto a maximum of three years. However if you get a C1 (between 3,500 and 7,500) the maximum period drops to one year. I may be wrong but seem to recall being told this at some stage.

Thanks Falcon I think your are correct, what I want to find out really is how much "paper work" there is each year and does it involve paying doctors and consultants for reports each time!

I may be wrong on this but I think you need to do the licence application you did when first diagnosed every year but the one you have been sent now at longer intervals (say three yearly) unless there is an issue with the yearly one. Probably worth ringing the DVLA to clarify.

Youre quite right,I have just regained in March my C1+e in March 2010.It would seem to be the 3 months figures on your meter seem to be the most important.Obviously they have to show well controlled and a minimum of four times a day.
This looks like something new as I too was under the impression that once you were on insulin you could not get this class back.Could be a lot of money though as it is only issued for twelve months.

Nice work Badboy, happy for you! I've given up cause I may not use a van from 1 year to the next, just felt annoyed I couldn't hire a van at all! I'm looking into getting a toe bar fitted at the moment and a trailer but not sure of the costs!
