Relationship to Diabetes

Hi all,new member and found some great forums on here, just got a question about why we can't take the dvla to court as being type 1 for 23 years and been offered my dream job of driving a 7.5 (C1) tonne truck around europe, wen't to doctors with all my reading written down then got told readings have to be on a tester, they wanted £178 up front to book an appointment in 4 weeks time and told me i have to have 3 appointments, now that diabetics can go for there hgv surely due to having grandads rights i should'nt have to fight this,we are all being punished, how many accidents do you know that have been caused by hypos, many thanks.

Well - I've had 2 of em, fortunately only in cars and both on the M42. That's two too many, without anyone else having any, I think! and they have ........ because it's 'Driving under the influence of drugs' though, you'd have to delve into the Court Reports for all of them to see how many were hypos and not some other substance LOL.

Our docs charge less when it's an 'occupational' licence, Mark. And - they (DVLA) do seem to take their time with these - bit like keeping your C1 after you're 70 - very hit and miss how long it takes the Medical Branch to process them.

Thank you for reply, always check my levels before driving,i drove 7.5 tonnes trucks for years but been in a factory for 10 years and a little bit annoyed with all the garbage we have to do,my diabetic nurse said she would put me in for my HGV so how can 3 so called doctors who don't even know me or my history make these judgements about if i'm fit to drive a C1 vehicle, thank you again.

Hello Mark, I'm fully aware how controversial this subject is as I am going through the red tape of attempting to get my CAR licence back after the wonderful, amazing, brilliant DVLA took the decision to revoke my licence after I applied for a C1 licence.
I didnt have to pay any money up front, but I have seen an independant diabetic consultant (the dvla choice) who checked my monitor (3 readings for 3 months) there were 3 readings under 4, these were written down and sent to dvla, 2 months later I couldnt drive. Apparently Im at a critical point of having a severe hypo and turning into the grim reaper when I get behind the wheel (this is according to the chief medical government people)
I havent needed any help when I feel a hypo coming on and deal with it and get on with it. All diabetics have low blood readings as far as I'm aware.
4 months since dvla revoked my licence I've been pushing this elephant up the stairs and its sent me to dispare, depression, anger, and I feel I have poor control over my diabetes, its added years onto my life.
If you do go for this job Mark keep your blood glucose monitor readings above 4 for your own sake.
