Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Does anyone know the parameters for the c peptide test. Have been given my result but have been told that i will have to discuss with consultant on Feb 3rd when i have my appointment. Have a result of 1 so was told my body is still producing some insulin but being treated as type 1. Trying to find out what a 'normal' nnon diabetic person would be. Understand that general guide would be 0.1 to 0.6 for type 1 so does that mean i am not type one. All confusing to me. Cheers for any help

Can your GP help in the mean time? It is not so long to wait to see the consultant, so I hope that goes well for you.

Gp not that fantastic didn't really want to help initially when diagnosed in December 08 even though blood glucose at 30 so dont really hold the gp pracvtice in high regard

Does it really matter to you what type of diabetes you have? In practice, difference between treatments (insulin / tablets / diet alone; in all cases, diet and activity, too) has more impact eg on driving licences. Might be better to wait to speak with an specialist consultant - it's only next week. Genetics may be important if you or siblings are considering having children - but best to get specific advice either from consultant diabetologist or geneticist.

hmm I had mine done but measured on a different scale, mine was 120 with range of 80-620. So it showed that I do produce insulin but at a low level.

If you are newly diagnosed then even type 1's would usually still be producing some insulin, it takes a while for those beta cells to give in totaly. Is there any other reason that you might not be a type 1? were you in DKA at diagnosis?

I am being treated as Type 1 with injections 4 times a day but have been waiting for these results so that i can be told what type i have. I think i think too much, psychologically for me it would make a difference as there is no history of diabetes in the family i have always had a good diet and exercise and am average weight and height. Find it difficult anyway to comprehend i have diabetes in the first place i suppose, still in denial yes but just want some concrete answers really. Feel i will have to wait until next week when speak to the consultant. The diabetic nurses said that it showed that i was still producing insulin but they could not say what a non-diabetic would be on this c peptide scale so were not able to give me the answer really. I am just really confused because although i am being treated as a type 1, have compiled risk assessments for work as type 1, other people are putting doubts in my mind as they say it is very uncommon for a 35 year old to get type 1 and you obviously have been diagnosed wrongly and you will have type 2. It may only be semantics but it does make a difference to me ad how i cope with the condition, i suppose. Sorry for writing at length just really confused and still trying to get to grips with all of this really.

Hey smudger, I'm type 1 and diagnosed at age 49. I also found out that a person I worked with was diagnosed Type 1 at 35. Just because something is uncommon doesn't make it impossible - we are the uncommon people!

did you have any other tests? namely antibody testing?
I'm not sure the c-peptide on it's own will be conclusive. If you had type 2 you would usually expect a high c-peptide because of insulin resistance.

It's not particulary unusual to be diagnosed with type 1 as an adult, northener, tracy _w, angeleyes copepod are a few members that come straight to mind who were diagnosed as adults.

I think it is important to find out what type you have, making sure that the treatment is working is of course the most important thing. Hope you can get some answers from your consultant

thank you to you all i will just have to wait and see if the consultant can give some advice more conclusive. i will keep you updated thankyou for you r support
