Afternoon,

So in the last month I’ve been signed off work and taking steps to get my diabetes under control once and for all. I’m nearly 3 weeks into taking all of my injections as and when I should. I’ve contacted the diabetes team and am now in regular contact and I’m slowly ticking off my list everything that I’ve been avoiding.

Today I was at the GP surgery to see the nurse and asked for the C-Peptide results whilst I was there. She told me that it can back as 231. I’ve tried googling but all the reference ranges are single figures so I wondered if anyone is able to translate?

I’ve now been in hospital twice with DKA, one of those times in resus with dangerously low potassium. When I was taking my insulin over the last year I had weekly ketones and I’ve lost 18kg but they’re still questioning type 1/2 hence the tests. I just really want an answer one way or the other and for them to stick to it - I’ve been diabetic over 8 years now

Any help appreciated ☺️

Well done Emma on doing so well. Will your GP be able to discuss your result with you.
when they put my test results online the GP surgery also have a link to Lab Tests ?Online. Do you have online access to your results? If I were you I would try to phone the surgery today if you can about the results as they are so much out of the reference range xx.

C-peptide tests used to be sent to Exeter for processing, (though maybe not all, now) and their results chart is here. The range of figures look more like the result you have been given.
As you can see, interpretation of the results also depends on whether it was fasting, or stimulated (ie, after a given amount of glucose), so you will know if you were fasting or not.

Well done @Emma Lowery - it sounds like you’re doing really well. I hope you can get some answers from your GP once n for all.

With most test results there ought to be some sort of comment on the actual result and an indication of what is the normal range alongside, on the results.

My C-Peptide tests done by MediChecks did show my result to be 'abnormal' and listed the normal range which I was below. I suspect the Exeter or whoever results did list the range which may show up on the surgery online test results or they may be in a letter which would be at an online level you can't access.

My C-peptide tests were carried out by Viapath, which is the phlebotomy provider co-owned by my local hospital trust.

But a number in isolation is meaningless because the results are relative to the laboratory and not absolute values, like a glucose level. They also need to be seen alongside your fasting level to be interpreted.

On my results the reference range is given as 370.00 – 1470.00 pmol/L for the fasting state. Which is very different to that Exeter laboratory range.

If you can ask your surgery for a printout of the results that should include the reference range and glucose level for the time it was taken.

Thanks everyone, I have a telephone appointment with the diabetes nurse a week on Monday so going to ask then for more information. They did a GAD test too so will get those results.

Either way I know I just have to work on my sugars. Been using the libre for 3 weeks and it’s estimating my hba1c at 70. My last blood test in November it was 127 so going the right way

Hope your results, aling with your clinical presentation provide some clarity over your diabetes type Emma.

But it sounds like you’ve been doing amazingly with your self care and re-engaging with your HCPs so you should feel really proud of that. And it’s clearly having a very positive effect on your BGs hopefully you are feeling better in yourself as a result 🙂
