Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1.5 LADA
Hi I'm Steve,
I have steroid induced hyperglycaemia a form of type 1.5 diabetes as a tertiary result of having Addisons disease which was also a result of something called Von Hippel Lindau syndrome.
I was diagnosed April 2018 and apart from a few weeks afterwards I've been in total burnout since.
I don't test my BG or take my insulin, i haven't had any medical follow up since the initial diagnosis.
I'm aware of the health impact of diabetes but suffer from a total disinterest in it.
I had an emotional breakdown at the end of 2018 which I feel was partly to do with the diagnosis, it was the straw that broke this camel's back.
As I have other health issues I don't want to have to deal with this as well. I'm 50 and work.

Hi @Stevieh1970 and welcome tothe forum.

Anitram has said it all really. Looked up the two conditions you mention and can understand why you feel the way you do and hopefully reaching out to this forum will help with the diabetes and help you to get back on the best track your other conditions will allow. Don't think there is anybody on the forum with your background but we have many with multiple conditions and maybe some of them can give you some thoughts.

One thing that does occur to me (as a T2 amateur) is that the diabetes is one thing amongst your problems that you can take control over and get on top of. Might only be a small victory, but a victory is a victory, however small.

Welcome to the forum @Stevieh1970

Sounds like you are having a really tough time.

We have members on the forum who live with Addisons (in some cases like @Pumper_Sue alongside other conditions), but I’ve never heard of Von Hippel Lindau syndrome, so I don’t know how similar that might be.

Like the others I hope that you have found sharing your difficulties here to have been a bit of a release.

And no one here needs to tell you the seriousness of ignoring your diabetes, because you clearly know that already.

I am reminded of the great quote by Arthur Ashe, “to achieve greatness, start where you are, use what you have, do what you can”. So whatever you can manage, start there. Small steps. I would suggest starting with your insulin doses. Use whatever your clinic have suggested for you - which I hope is MDI. And be kind to yourself. Even small steps, when added together, get you a long way. Just keep going.

You might find it helpful to call the Diabetes UK helpline, who will be able to chat things through with you and offer you some support and help, including referral to NHS DSNs for clinical advice if appropriate. You can call 0345 123 2399 Monday-Friday 9am-6pm.

You could also consider calling NHS 111 for advice.

Welcome @Stevieh1970 It sounds like you’ve got a lot going on so it’s no wonder you felt a diabetes diagnosis was too much to be thinking about.

You said you did look after the diabetes for a few weeks. It’s hard, isn’t it? That was something that got to me - having to think so much all the time and never having a day off.

I hate it but I try to channel that hate to beat it as best I can. That makes me feel better about it - as @Docb said, it’s like a ‘win’.

Hello Steve and welcome to the forum.
Taking steroids for Addison's disease wont give you diabetes as the steroids you are taking only replace what your body does not produce.

You sound as if you have an awful lot on your plate and really need to reach out to the medical profession so you can be helped to put things into prospective.
So you feel better in yourself both mentally and physically you need to bring your blood sugars down. Having very high blood sugars will make you feel very black which obviously doesn't help your situation.

We can all help you in your journey for better control and understanding if you want the help. 🙂

How many time have you never heard of something and then within a short space of time you hear of it again, I was watching something yesterday which mentioned some syndrome and then blow me it was the answer to a question in University Challenge.
You learn something everyday.
