Caitlin Fess and her family, of Bullskin Township, had never heard of Wolfram syndrome until 2011. But genetic testing done on the teen because of diabetes and eye problems showed she had the little-known disorder.

Wolfram syndrome is a complex genetic disorder that affects many of the body's organ systems.

?There is no treatment for Wolfram syndrome, a very severe form of juvenile diabetes and neurodegeneration,? said Dr. Fumihiko Urano, Samuel E. Schechter Professor of Medicine at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Mo.
