RECORD numbers of sick Scots rang GP helplines as they battled colds and flu over the Christmas and New Year holidays.
OUT-OF-HOURS call centre staff were stretched to the limit answering one inquiry every three seconds.
And bosses across the country are preparing for a huge absentee list when thousands of Scots return to work tomorrow.
NHS 24, who run the telephone health advice service, dealt with more than 20,000 calls over both holiday weekends ? the highest in four years.
Staff answered more than 72,000 inquiries over the whole period ? mainly from people suffering from coughs, colds and stomach bugs.
