Any advice for buffet when it comes to taking insulin, I managed christmas dinner as I calculated the carbs prior to it. ( also other advantage of oven breaking down so didn't have to make it, hence in laws helped.)

However, I'm going to a friend's house and i'm apprehensive due to calculating carbs and knowing how much insulin to take without causing a hypo. Any suggestions ? My insulin at the moment is one unit to 10mg

If it were me, I'd check out what's on offer when I got there or when the food is brought in, tot up a first round roughly and jab for that + a bit more, then scoff my initial plateful, keeping tally, then go back for the shortfall of carbs.

You could of course do 2 or 3 shots across the evening, being careful with insulin stacking. That way you can spread your eating out a bit and maybe have something sweet later on.

But testing will be your best friend. And remember to count the carbs in beer but spirits and dry wine are carb free. So the alcohol will lower your BG later during the night and tomorrow morning. Don't go too mad with the booze is my advice.🙂

I find that splitting the injection is the best approach - inject before starting to eat for the minimum amount of carbs you plan to eat after surveying the available fare, then inject again as the evening progresses, perhaps adding in a correction if you ate more than you had planned to start with (if you see what I mean!). This spreads the active insulin over a longer period and also allows you a check to make any adjustments. I also tend to underestimate carbs in the offerings when it's difficult to know accurately what the food might contain. 🙂 Hope you enjoy it! 🙂

Thanks guys, I'll give it a try and fill you in on the results.

Also Happy new year to all 🙂

Yup, if you are drinking alcohol, underestimation on the carb front doesn't hurt at all.

As promised update.

Tested prior to eating was 10.8, took ten units of insulin, tested half way through the evening 12.5, took 13 units balanced against the amount of pizza and garlic bread that I was going to eat and was good with diet coke and one half glass of wine.

Have to go through the whole process again tomorrow as going to another buffet. Well they say practice makes perfect 🙂

What was your BG after the event ?

ie. before bed and on waking ? That's the measure of how well you covered it all, since pizza has a fair old delay on the spike and it may well have carried forward through the night.

Hope it goes well tomorrow and don't forget to report back so we can try it ourselves in a similar situation.🙂
