On boxing day i'm going to the in laws for a buffet.
1st i'll be having my usual breakfast at home (followed by breakfast QA)
2nd i'll be probably having a sandwich or sausage roll for lunch (at the bingo with mil, uncle, daughter, son & hubby) (followed by lunch QA)
3rd at teatime (ish) / early evening it will be a buffet: sausage on sticks / cheese & pineapple on sticks / pizza / scotch eggs / sandwiches of some sort / crab sticks / christmas cake 😡. The question i'm asking here is am i best injecting (12u humalog - teatime) & just have whatever i want in one go or can i "pick" throughout the evening?

Gill 🙂

Are you still on fixed doses of insulin for your meals then Gill? Any prospect of going on a carb-counting course? It's easier to have everything at once because then, hopefully, the food will all be digesting as your insulin gets working. If you spread the food throughout the evening (and remember, it's mainly carbs you need to consider: things like cheese, nuts and sausages won't have much effect on your BG levels - if any), then you might end up having a hypo because you have too much insulin working before you've consumed enough food to match it. I would probably split my injection, having some before I started eating, then the rest and hour or two later.

I'd say do whatever you feel happiest and safest doing - hope you enjoy it! 🙂

Thanks for the reply.
When i last saw my dsn i showed her a typical list of meals ie breakfast, lunch.......she said to match the insulin to carbs at breakfast & lunch then maybe just stick to 12u at teatime??? then BI (basal) is reduced to 30 at bedtime.
No, no prospect of a carb course :(

Thanks i'll enjoy 🙂

Why not match insulin to carbs in the evening as well? Makes no sense! Plus, you are entitled to a place on an education course - what did they tell you?

My thoughts exactly!!
About the carb course.....i haven't actually asked about this as i just know they'll say no at my surgery plus there is nowhere where i live (close to home) that does one 😡

Do you go to your GP surgery for all your diabetes care then? If so, then you should ask to be referred to a consultant-led clinic. You will then have access to a fully-trained DSN who can teach you about carb counting if there is no convenient course nearby. 🙂

Yes i go to my GP surgery for all my diabetes care. I'll see what i can find out.

Yeah you should find a diabetes clinic near you. I never go to my GP regarding anything to do with my diabetes. My diabetes clinic is there for everything diabetes related and my GP is there for everything else.

I'm on the waiting list for the education course DAFNE.

Well - at least that explains the stupid advice you've been given (.... why do GP's take things in hand they blatantly don't properly understand? It's bloody dangerous.)

You carb-count everything. Once you know what dose you need for X amount of carbs at Y time of day - then that's what you have.

And why inject AFTER breakfast? why not inject before and thereby try and match the insulin peak to the carb spike? - cos that's by far the best way of doing it. I'd also inject for the saus roll/sandwich because if it's over 10g carbs, it needs insulin. For me.

The trouble with injecting all yer insulin upfront when you are 'grazing' is precisely that - the insulin could well spike before you get to the trifle down yer neck stage LOL - so I would - and will - do what Alan said, have a quick scan of the table and see what I fancy eating right now, and only inject for that. An hour later, I'll do it again ......
