Hi all,

I have been taking 3 metformin a day since just before xmas, my bs is generally 8 to 9 in the morning and anything up to 10 to 14 after dinner. I am still waiting to see a diabetic nurse which I have been told it can take 8-12 weeks till I will get an appointment. Is this normal or not, I am trying to watch what I eat but also a little concerned that my daily calorie intake is low (1000-1200) a day on average.

Any advice very much appreciated as I feel that I am flying blind at the moment,

Serena

Hi Serena, I think it takes a little while for the full effects of the metformin to be experienced, so you may begin to see some improvements soon. 8 or 9 in the morning is a little on the high side although there may be many factors to do with this, but it is not terrible and they have come down from when you got diagnosed so something is happening. Are you reducing your calorie intake in order to lose weight? I think, as you are concerned you should book an appointment with your doctor so he or she can explain and hopefully reassure you - they will know your situation much better than we can. When are you testing after a meal and what sorts of things are you eating? Have you read Maggie Davey's letter, which should give you some insight and understanding so that you can manage things better? Depending on when you are testing after meals and what you eat then 10-12 is not bad if you are starting from around 8 or 9 before the meal as it is only a small relative rise 🙂

Hi

Thank you for a quick reply. Will try to give it a bit of time, not trying to lose weight. Can't say I have much faith in my doctor, was given the tablets when diagnosed and told to come back in 3 months, had to fight for a referral to the diabetic nurse. Been havin either toast, bacon sandwich or yogurt and muslie for breakfast, salad or sandwich for lunch and either meat with potatoe and veg or similar for dinner, generally been 6-7 before dinner then rising. Normally test about 2 hours after eating. Current main concern that I have is that I have to go away for work at the end of the month and wil have very little control on what food is available for me.

The main thing you need to watch out for is the carbohydrates in your meals, as this is what will raise your blood sugars, so pay attention to these in particular whilst you are away. Some types of carb will raise levels more slowly and others will have a much faster impact, So things like granary bread is much slower and gradual than white bread. The main skill in managing your diabetes is learning what foods you can tolerate well, and in what quantities, and what you should avoid. It can be a long and tedious process, but after a while you find you have absorbed it! 🙂

hi ...as northe says watch the carbs as they contain sugar too ..i am one who ate musli and yoghurt or porridge but found both to be a no no ...its difficult to find a balance but thro the testing you should find a balance that should suit you
as for when you are away ...avoid the obvious carbs... ask for more greenleaf veg .... good luck x
