about 7 months ago i was getting a lot of pain in my right knee, couldt bear wait on it unable to walk on it. saw a nurse practicer who told me it was my age and wear and tear. about 5.5 months a i had a fall at home Iwas taken to AE they xrayed it and told me it was broken but it was a old injury I stayed in the Norfolk and Norwich for 3.5 weeks at first they put a plaster cast on it but removed it as the consultant said i would not be able to bend it I was then sent to Ogden Court a rehab unit i was on strong pain killers and morfine i spent 4 months tothe day there unble to walk more than a couple of steps with the aid of a walking frame Igot myself a mobility scooter and its been a lifeline. i saw the consultant who said u can bear some weight on it im discharging u from the clinic and that it would take a long time to heal My question is this do u thinkits worth getting it x rayed privatey {have some saving to pay for it} to see if its healing at all im in a great deal of pain am on 2 heavy duty pain killers and the ocasional use of morfine
I belive in the NHS but at times im in so much pain that i cry i want to be able to walk again instead of relieing on a wheerchair and my scooter is that to much to ask

Gail, in your shoes, I'd go back to my GP and explain I was concerned about the slow progress you're making, and ask him to send you for an X-ray.

If he declines, then ask him what his reasons are.

It could be that after all this time, another sort of imaging would give a clearer picture.

Do you have or have you been checked for osteoporosis which is where your bones become thinner/ porous? My late mum broke her knee cap in a fall in her late forties and was later diagnosed with it. Bone health can be affected by some medication and worsened by smoking and alcohol and extreme dieting but in our family there is a genetic link. Ask your GP surgery about it. I hope your health improves.

In my time I have heard from a person who had their kneecap fixed together with strips of sterilised coral, and also someone who'd been in a lot of pain even though the fractured kneecap mended, but who subsequently snapped a tendon in the knee. The surgeon warned that it might not end well if he opened up the joint, but the pain was gone after the op, the surgeon said that he'd flipped the kneecap to look under it, but saw no problem. As all went well it was assumed that the pain was a trapped nerve which was released at some point in the procedure.
They were years ago.
There must be things which could be done now a days to help rather than just leaving you hanging on and hoping.

Knees do seem to take a long time to heal as you are weight bearing on it all the time. I am still suffering from a knee that does not feel quite right but it is hard to see what could be done. I went back to the consultant after nearly 2 years and they did an MRI but all it revealed was the ruptured tendon repair had been OK. I just think there is now arthritis in the knee as I have it in my shoulders. Physio doesn't make much difference, painkillers don't make much difference, a knee support helps a bit. I am grateful I can walk even though it is uncomfortable. I regret the walking I do is what I need to do rather than being able to go and enjoy a nice long walk which I did before.
I am certainly thinking of asking my GP for a referral to somebody.
