On another board i go on a poster mentioned that her sister is a type one brittle diabetic Have never heard of a brittle diabetic what is it?

I think it just means that control is very hard to achieve as there are no obvious patterns emerging when testing, must be a real pain in the ass.........

not the most technical explanations, sure someone will know though.....

Hi gail It's uncontrolled Type 1 called Labile Diabetes. It's quite rare and can affect people with physcological problems and depression. Sheena xxxx

For the last 30 years , my diabetes was always discribed as brittle diabetes and that was because it was very difficult to control.i could take the same amount of insulin , eat the same , exercise the same and it would be drastically different every day .

Hi Gail, I'm sure I remember being given that term early on in my treatment, everyone's descriptions would fit with how I was at the time. Thankfully things are a lot more stable now, until the anxiety gets the better of me!

brittle diabetes

i think it describes mine now, but am a type 2, and i know my aunt had it and she was type 2 as well...need more info, as seems un controllable atm!!

Hi frannykins, welcome to the forum 🙂 Sorry to hear that you are having problems controlling your levels. Are you on any medication for your diabetes, and have you been diagnosed long?

I think it may take many years to actually come to the conclusion that ones condition is brittle, as it can often be put down to the wrong treatment/regime.......

This is so true - my brother was labelled brittle for years but the real reason was his disinterest and poor management. This has been proven by the fact that for the past year or so he has decided to take an interest and take control - and has done really well.

"Brittle Diabetes" is an old term that has gone out of fashion and the use of which is discouraged.
It meant see-sawing, apparently uncontrollable bgs, but with the advent of powerful and effective analogue insulins from the mid 1990s onwards, it was generally reckoned to be just poorly controlled Type 1 Diabetes.
