Britons are enjoying good health for longer, new figures suggest.

Data published by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) indicate that 'healthy life expectancy' increased by more than two years between 2005-07 and 2008-10.

This means that on average, people can expect to spend a greater proportion of their life in good health.

Ed Jessop, vice-president of the Faculty of Public Health, told the BBC that the figures were encouraging.

He said: 'They show that action on public health works. There is particular success for people living in England.'
