🙂 Hi to all,
I have not been on for a few months as i have been trying to get my head around a few things. I have always looked upon the B.D.A. as an organisation that is there for diabetics that is why i have donated to them on occations but now when i need a bit of help they are not interested.
I am under going tests at the Freeman Hospital in Newcastle where i have to travel by train as i am unable to drive due to not having any hypo warning signs.
Any way, in a weeks time i am having to go there twice in the space of ten days and from where i live it costs an arm and a leg to get there.
It was suggested i contact the b.d.a. who may help with travel expences, so i did. The answer i got from them was that they are not a charity that can help.
Does this mean that if you have to have treatment away from home and you cannot afford to travel then stuff you sunshine cos thats the way it is coming across to me. I would be grateful for any advice
Many thanks Rick x

Hi Rick, I am sorry to hear this. When I was discharged from hospital after diagnosis the NHS paid for a taxi home, perhaps someone knows if the NHS or other government departments are available to help out with expenses in hardship cases?

Hi Rick, as you can't drive and public transport not suitable then the hospital should provide the transport. Speak to the consultants sectary to see what she comes up with.
Also people on certain benefits are entitled to travel expenses so if on any do check this out.
Good luck with your tests.

Hi Sue, thanks for reply i will check these out. When tests are done i will let you know the results, once again thanks x

Hello Ricky. I think your best move would be to speak to the consultants secretary, who will know what could claim for. I have been to several hospital appointments, not lately, and not for d, where transport has been provided for me at no cost.

Hi Ricky,

If you claim Income Support/tax credits or other benefits your entitled to an exemption card for medical travel expenses. So if you have to use a train/bus or other then you can claim that back - just keep all receipts and give it to the cashier at the hospital.🙂Bev

p.s. You do have to apply for the card first as you cant claim unless you have it.

Hi Bev, all you do is take in your letter of entitlement and show the cashier your apt card and letter. Depending on what way you travel will depend on how much will be paid. Taxi fares for instance are not paid for I believe.

Hi Sue,

The cashier wont pay anything unless you show them a receipt for travel costs - a 'letter of attendance signed by the Consultant/GP' and the plastic 'exemption card' and/or proof of any benefit like Income Support or similar.🙂Bev

I had no problem with claiming travel allowance. Just produced my apt letter and letter of proof of benefit, said I travelled by car. They coughed the dosh so to speak 🙂 I can understand them asking for receipt of public transport but it would be very difficult for own car.
Car park money is also refunded. No questions asked not even the registration is required.
Perhaps different areas have different rules.
