Britain faces a "public health time bomb waiting to explode", according to the authors of a World Health Organisation report which reveals that women and children would be better off living in almost any other western European country.

Women in Britain live two years less on average than those in Spain, France and Italy, while death rates among under-fives are worse than in the Czech Republic and Slovenia as well as most countries in western Europe.

Meanwhile high rates of unemployment among NEETs ? young people not in employment, education or training ? in Britain threaten to "consign a generation to the scrap-heap", it was claimed.

In obesity rates Britain is "just about the worst in Europe", experts added, coming bottom of the 19 countries for which figures were available including Hungary, Estonia and Lithuania.
