We've just had a new consultant start at my hospital and he was great.
I told him about the problems I've been having. He studied my pump results in detail and thinks that I'm doing everything that I can as I have gastroparesis. My HBA1C is 6.5 and 7 day average 7.5 with 2% hypos. He explained that the CCG will be making their decision this month about the Libre and if I meet the criteria, which he thinks I will, he will be writing to my GP and CCG proposing that I have the Libre on prescription.
He is happy to support my gastroparesis medications so I no longer also need to go to the other hospital for gastroparesis which is about three-four hours travelling time per round trip on public transport.
Although I am overweight they don't want me losing weight due to nutritional deficiencies with gastroparesis and I think (hope) he is putting this into writing to my GP.
I discussed my concerns about amytriptilene for the back and he said to try it for 2-3 days and see how I get on.
My overall cholesterol was 4.7 and my good cholesterol is good so no need to increase statins.
Happy with my kidneys and all of my blood test results.
Blood pressure was borderline but doesn't want to put me on medication until I have a 24 blood pressure machine from GP and get the results from that.

That all sounds really good Amanda! 🙂 Hope he's fairly young and therefore not likely to retire soon after you've found him! 🙂 Great results and looking good for the Libre (I think you should have a CGM with alarms, to be honest, but a Libre on prescription would be a good start 🙂)

lol Northerner "thank goodness he's young" was my thought after the appointment 🙂 I know what you mean about the CGM but I think I would only get one of them if I had hypos that needed assistance and I'm going to keep everything crossed that doesn't happen. Im really, really pleased that his proposal is going to be keeping the number of test strips plus the Libre on prescription. I was also thrilled about my kidneys 🙂

Sounds like a great appointment AJ, fingers crossed for you with the Libre prescription! You have done incredibly well coping with everything, I really admire you. One thing I would comment, about the amytriptiline- is 2 - 3 days long enough to give it a fair chance? I take it as a migraine preventative and honestly didn't feel the full effects for a good 4 weeks after starting it. I was an emotional wreck initially on it but stabilised as I adjusted. Just a thought 🙂 x

Thank you Sprogladite. I think with the amitriptiline he was trying to persuade me to try it because I was reluctant due to me possibly not noticing nighttime hypos and the effect on gastroparesis. I guess he was saying give it a try for a short time to see if it does or doesn't affect these. Thanks for saying about the four weeks, I will move onto that length if it doesn't negatively affect the other two things - I must admit that I didn't realise that it would take that long to see if it works 🙂 x

Sounds brilliant Amanda - well done!

Thanks Mike.

Sounds great Amanda. Don’t tell everyone where you live, they’ll all want to move there:D

With regard to the amitriptiline 2-3 days isn’t really enough, as Sprogladite suggests. It’s long enough to experience the side effects of a little dopiness and dry mouth, (which wear off) but not long enough to get the benefit. Been there and done that. You need at least a couple of weeks. Though I have to say I switched later to Gabapentin, which I found more effective.

Thanks Mike. That's really helpful. I am nervous about trying it but I guess I must give it a try.

Thank you Lucy 🙂

Great appointment there Amanda. Fingers crossed for the libre on prescription. X

That sounds like a nice positive appointment. Isn't it great when you find a doctor or consultant that's supportive and on your wave length ? Almost like a little bit of feel good medicine in itself. As others have said, fingers crossed for the Libre prescription.🙂

Thank you Stitch and Lisa. It was great to have such a positive appointment - just hoping that he confirms everything in writing so that my GP has the same information 🙂

Good news AJ. So good that you have found a good Consultant and that this will also save those extra trips.
Glad he is young and may therefore hang around.
