Hi all, this is not Diabetes related, as such! I will need to find out about the Diabetic care in the area.

This is more related to my son. My son has very complex mental health issues, it's a very long and complicated story so I won't delve into it!....Some of the problem relates geographically. We live on the Isle Of Wight you see, and here, it is very difficult as there is no Gay community, well, not out in the open or very acive anyhow!

What I mean is, is that there are no resources here for young Gay people...You see, my youngest son is Gay. Whilst his sexuality is not an issue for him or us, it does have an impact on his life in terms of feeling lonley and isolated, and means that living here is not a great place for him to live or flourish in. The Island has a backward mentality and does not celebrate diversity at all!

We feel that we need to start thinking about moving...and what better place than Brighton to have access to Gay resources. The problem is that I do not know Brighton well, I have been told that it is a 'rough' place to live and that there are many 'No Go Areas' for Gay people?....Can anyone tell me what areas, or estates to avoid please?....We are not home owners, we would have to rent. I just would be so grateful of any thoughts on living in Brighton please.

I know this may seem like a drastic move to make, but, like I said, this is very complcated, I feel my sons life depends on this move.

Thank you for reading....Ellowyne xXx

Hiya. As far as I know there's a relatively strong gay community over here in Southampton, and as you live on the IOW it may be a bit easier? As fir brighton, I've never been so don't know what its like.

How old is your son btw? Old enough to go out to pubs/clubs in the evening? Let me do a bit of research.

edit: http://www.theedgesouthampton.com/ southamptons only gay club so brighton will probably be better 🙂

Thanks Salmon Puff, that was really kind of you!....My son is 18, however, he is, at this time completly dpendent on me and his Dad because of his mental health issues. I was hoping that, by being in a 'Gay friendly place' that we may be able to get my son some specialist counselling. They really have no idea here on the Island, I hate this backward place!! The attitude here makes me so angry!

Thank you for posting 🙂

theres a few from brighton in here tez and tom i think they can tell you more on area etc x

I believe there is still a strong gay community in Brighton, though not perhaps as 'in your face' as it once was. You should definitely be able to find your son some support there, and yourselves too if you want it. I don't know the place really well, we used to love exploring the Lanes and never really got much further from the railway station than that. Like everywhere else, parts of it are excellent.

I hope it works out for you.

hi sweetie xx my step son (23) is gay and has lived in both brighton and London x he is away now till early next week, but i will talk to him when he returns and pm you advice if you like x

Try the council. Main switchboard is 01273 290000. They should put you through to an appropriate department.

This might help http://www.switchboard.org.uk/

I like Brighton have been a couple of times and felt very safe and welcome on the gay scene. Maybe would be worth going and spending a few days and see if you like the feel of the place. Good luck in your search
