A HEALTH expert has described a shortage of GPs as an “accident waiting to happen”.

David Liley, chief executive of Healthwatch Brighton and Hove, said the city’s lack of doctors is a problem that needs to be addressed quickly.

A report by the organisation, which scrutinises NHS services, found there is one GP for every 2,397 people in Brighton Hove.

That is 600 more than the national average of 1,787 people per GP.

Mr Liley said finding and retaining doctors was hard as the job was becoming more stressful as residents live longer and suffer from long-term conditions.

Strikes me that if 1,786 people is the national average for GPs then somebody is slacking. When I was a single handed GP my list was around 2,500. Same in my previous practice in Maidstone with four doctors. And these days nurses do a lot of the stuff doctors used to do. Plus their own on call service.

Just how cushy can you make a job for the money GPs earn these days?

Wouldn’t want to live in Brighton anyway. Shingle beach, and I’m heterosexual.

Incidentally, the average age of the population in the unitary area is 35, so it isn’t loaded with geriatrics.

Out local surgery has just managed to add 2 new full time GPs to their list. But then housing is comparatively cheap here, schooling is excellent, and our beaches are all sandy and mostly deserted. It must be the beaches.
