Since being fitted with my Libre a few weeks back I have noticed that my usual breakfast of porridge sends my BG into orbit about 30 mins to 1 hr after (up to 13/14 is not unusual.
Does anyone have any tips for an alternative breakfast (cereal?) that would be more slow release?

Forgot to mention that I am currently on lantus + 2 x 850 mg metformin.

Do you not have a bolus (mealtime) insulin yet @JohnS ?

That would be my go-to question for my clinic if I were struggling with post-meal levels on a basal only regime.

I never found a cereal that suited me unfortunately. Even the ‘high fibre’ ones were fast into my system. Weetabix was like rocket fuel (though some find it suits them fine).

Muesli or granola might be worth an experiment if you can have a smaller quantity and eat with yoghurt and berries?

Porridge has been my go to breakfast for years although pre T1 diagnosis. I also found it sky rockets my sugar levels if I now take it same manner as before which was just porridge with raspberries and blueberries

BUT reducing the amount of porridge and loading up with a lot of full fat yoghurt and I'm acceptable on sugar levels now. I believe others use full fat double cream instead to good effect

Plus chia seeds because they're awesome

Thanks for your replies.
Ref bolus insulin, I have been prescribed Tresiba and also NovoRapid as a bolus by my consultant but it has not got through my GP as yet. He does not want me to start with the bolus until he sees how I get on with the Tresiba.
I had a similar experience with Weetabix!
I have tried cutting down on my porridge but that doesn’t seem to work so I will give granola or muesli a try. I have always avoided it in the past because of the high sugar content but I see they now do low sugar versions too. Chia seeds sound interesting, I will do some research!

I would (gently) remind your GP that the NovoRapid was prescribed by the specialist, and that as much as you value his generalist support when you're initially seeking care for medical symptoms, the specialist is the one with specific expertise in your now diagnosed diabetes

Sorry if I have confused the situation! It is my consultant who has advised re holding off on the bolus. (Which due to my wife’s dogged attention we collect this afternoon!

I am T1, bolus / basal , Lantus / Novarapid + 2 x 1000mg Metformin , I have porridge or all bran for breakfast and get a different response some times, this morning I was 4.4 at 08.30 hrs ate porridge for breakfast BG rose to a high of 7.7, the day before was 5.1 at 08.30 hrs had the same amount of porridge BG rose to a high of 15.3 both morning doses of Novarapid were 28 units. Both nights before going to bed BG's were 10.3 , had the same dose of Lantus both times and activity levels were similar throughout both days, and same doses of Novarapid and amounts of carbs for meals, not yet sussed out why the difference, unless it is the Dawn Phenomenon

I would wonder if your injection site was compromised with such a disparity in results from a relatively high dose of NR. Where do you inject your NR? Are there any limps and bumps at that site? (Lipohypertrophy?) Do you rotate your injection sites?

Novarapid injection sites are midriff either side and above & below of Belly Button, location changes for every dose , thighs and buttocks used for Lantus , I have been injecting for 29 years I have 1 specific area which I avoid as I have developed a lump their in the past, 28 units was a higher dose than normal as I was not going to be working in the garden both mornings. Still fine tuning in an effort to improve on present score of time in range of 78%.

Picked up some sugar free granola from Holland & Barrett and after having it for breakfast for the past 3 days I have to say that the results have been very promising. One hour after breakfast instead of ~16 I have recorded between 5.8 - 6.8! Also I am having slightly more than the 30g recommended on the packet as this did not cover the bottom of the bowl! A great result so far - we will making our own mix next.
