Am I right in thinking that Burgen has less carbs per slice than wholemeal, 11.8g I think.
Is there not much difference in carbs between white bread & wholemeal? Looking at what’s in my cupboard, white is 17.9 per slice & the wholemeal is 17. I’d thought it was a bigger difference.
My reading was higher 2hrs after eating 2 slices of Burgen for breakfast than the previous day when I’d had 2 slices of wholemeal. #confused#verynewtothis

There is very little difference in carbs between white & wholemeal, though there is more fibre in wholemeal that may slow down the absorption of the carbs a bit. Normal bread can spike very quickly (usually within a hour) but Burgen takes longer to spike, so that may be why you saw a higher reading with the Burgen. If you tested an hour after the wholemeal, you may find that it spikes you more than the Burgen after 1 hour. Hope that makes sense.🙂

It does. Thank you

I have hovis low carb bread I found in my local Morrison’s 9.9g carbs per slice I can have 1 slice with only a .3 rise

Hi folks, having trouble with bread myself, already eat a wholewheat version haven't really had white bread for years, anyone got any advice on other types of bread which don't spike are better. I have already cut down greatly on bread but still find I want to eat it.

Well they all have carbs in them to some degree but how much a slice will increase your BG - we don't have the slightest idea!

Just go for a loaf of whatever they sell (eg the Burgen or Hovis already mentioned) wherever you shop, that has the lowest amount of carbs per slice - and see how you react.

Another option is to make your own. I make low carb bread that doesn't spike at all. The recipe should be on here somewhere. Getting all the ingredients can be a bit pricey though.

I like this Hovis to have as a change from Burgen. Sadly it has disappeared from our Morrisons and everywhere else for weeks :(. I bought the last Livlife on the shelf in Waitrose the other day for the first time in ages - slices are small and have around 3.8 in each, but it does have a slightly funky taste & texture, so I don't buy it often.
