Hi,
Just wondering if anyone can share their stories. My partner is 40 and was diagnosed with diabetes last year following a 3 day nosebleed.
He has just had his annual eye screening and has been told he may need laser surgery on one eye to balance his vision. Naturally, he is terrified that this is signalling the beginning of him losing his sight, so while we wait for an appointment I am researching stories (good & bad) so that we can get a picture of what to expect.
I will be grateful for any responses

Hi Shelle, welcome to the forum 🙂 Sorry to hear about your partner's diagnosis and I do understand how scary the prospect of laser surgery is, especially so soon after diagnosis. I was/am in a similar position as they have detected diabetic changes in my eyes close to the macula - the changes aren't bad, but it is their proximity to the macula that makes them more urgent for review as this is more likely to affect my sight. However, I have been to the eye hospital for my past two checks and so far they have said that the changes have stabilised so no laser surgery is necessary as yet. I hope this will be the case for your partner, as when he is checked more closely they may decide it is unnecessary.

If he does need the surgery then be reassured that many people here have experienced this and have said that, whilst it is uncomfortable, it is not as bad as feared. Keeping blood pressure under control and managing blood sugar levels well is the best way to reduce the risk of further problems with the eyes. There is a lot they can do these days to preserve sight, so try not to worry unduly at this stage - perhaps a word with his GP would help so he understands more fully the problems and treatments.

Good luck to him, and you! Please feel free to ask any questions here, there is a wealth of experience and lots of friendly, helpful people. Sharing experiences can really help to calm fears and stop you feeling isolated 🙂

Hi there and a warm welcome to the forum Shelle, theres a good few on the boards who have had to have surgery so im sure they will be along and share there experiences with you x good luck to your boyfriend x

Welcome from me............

I hope your boyfriend doesn't need the laser in the end but if he does it will be positive. As mentioned, if blood pressure and blood sugars are improved, these issues with the eye can actually improve and be reversed.....

I wish you both luck when the time comes......:D

Hi Shelle and welcome. I had my laser eye surgery one week ago today. It was my first time and I was very nervous. It was a bit uncomfortable but no pain, or injections. The pupil is the size of a dinner plate, so sunglasses are definately needed, also I went alone. He may not need it now, try not to worry ( easier said than done, I know) but my vision after a few hours was fine and then there is a chek up in a months time. I, btw, have had type 1 for 22 years and have always gone for eye tests and routine eye checks at the hospital.
It's the unknown that's the scariest thing. Take care both of you, with very best wishes Sheena

Thank You!!!

Thank you everyone for your responses.
We are hoping that the surgery will not be needed but it's the waiting that makes him so anxious.
I will no doubt be back with more questions etc,
Take care all
Shelle & Mark 🙂

welcome Shelle and I'm also hoping your boyfriend doesn't need to have the surgery, but if he does, these days they are so good, you won't need to worry. I know it's a scary thought, but just wait and see what the clinic says.

Hi Shelle. Welcome to the forum. I had laser eye surgery done today. It wasn't the most enjoyable of experiences but right now I feel really good and I know what to expect the next time. Please don't worry about it as the staff who carry out the treatment go out of their way to answer questions about the treatment itself.

Hi Shelly,

My chappie has been recieving laser for 2 year now as he keep having victorious heamorages. It has really helped him but he must get rest after the prcedure. It does leave scarring but they will only laser if needed!
He is 30 and type 1 and is steadily losing blood from his vision.
Hope all goes well

Lissy
