As attorneys made their opening statements in the sexual assault trial of Frederick Allen this morning, prosecutors argued the 32-year-old used an insulin pen to drug and rape a University of Colorado student, while his defense countered that she simply had gotten sick after a night of drinking.
Allen is facing nine felony counts, including three counts of sexual assault, first-degree assault, two counts of second-degree assault and tampering with physical evidence, after being indicted by the Boulder County grand jury in January 2012.
According to court records, police and prosecutors allege Allen used a dose of insulin to drug the victim and then rape her after meeting her at a Pearl Street bar in February 2011.
Deputy District Attorney Katharina Booth described the victim as a "vivacious" pre-med student at CU who enjoyed hanging out with her friends while maintaining a full course load and two jobs.
"That all changed on Feb. 22, when she officially met the defendant," Booth said.
