Bolusing in the pump when wearing a dress

On my new pump I have to access the pump in order to do a Bolus.
(Do I hear a comment from @trophywench asking why I ever changed from the Combo!!)

How do others manage this when wearing a dress. The only ideas I have so far are
  • Stuff it in my bra and fish it out that way. The 780 is a bit chunky but it might come to that
  • Put an invisible zip in the side seam of each dress without one so I can fish out the pump
What do others do? I really don’t want to get rid of my dresses, (or leave them for four years!!) and I have some time at present to sort this out.

You can get a pouch that hangs off the middle of the bra so you don’t even have to shove the pump in the cup. If you can put zips in the side seams then that’s a great other option. Or a large button hole so you can thread the cannula through without having to put a zip in.

My current pump is a DANA so I can bolus from my phone so it’s not an issue - and hugely convenient, dress or not. But with previous pumps, I put my pump in a Tubigrip around my thigh. I could then hitch my dress up slightly (usually when sitting down to eat) remove the pump and bolus, then tuck it back in quickly. It also doesn’t spoil the line of your dress having it on your thigh.

I thought the 780 had Bluetooth, and a phone app where you could do a bolus from the app,
I was relying on that when I upgrade shortly, looks like I’m changing pumps to a mylife YPSOpump and not Meditronic

I don’t have a pump so can’t offer personal experience but my youngest daughter's friend stuffs hers in her bra and is happy to whip it out when needed. On my daughter’s hen party last year it was in and out like a fiddlers elbow as I was worried she was hypo at times, lots of alcohol consumed, so I kept getting her to check. She’s been diabetic since she was two and on a pump for many, many years, she’s 28 now, so I suppose she’s had plenty of time to hone these things as you will too Sue. Good luck with it all.

When wearing a dress with my tubey pump, I would put it in a garter belt type holder. In reality, this was a HidIn pump belt wrapped twice around my thigh. When I needed to bolus, I would sit at a table and surreptitiously remove my pump, bolus and return it.

I tried putting it in my bra. Apart from being “lopsided”, i had to go the the bathroom to bolus. And, if there was a pump error, I found my beeping boob a tad embarrassing.

We wear the pump on the outside, either in a pretty belt or in a convenient pocket if the dress has one, and just cut a small hole in the seam to feed the tube through.

I am always utterly gobsmacked with people who have room in their bras for a pump. The largest cup size I've ever needed was a C, when I was overweight. Usually and still, now, a B. To accommodate a pump I'd need 3 cups in my bra!

I always look for pockets when I buy clothes then one can usually make a big enough hole in the seam of that to pass the tubing through and then hike up the skirt of the garment to attach the tubing to the cannula.

I have a pump hanger, well two, one white that accidentally got chucked in the washing machine with darker stuff so no longer Omo white LOL, and a black one and also a cople of thingies with lanyards, so I can 'wear' my pump 'around my neck' when I'm on the beach etc.

You'll always find a way - if you WANT to !!

Always wondered if one could go to where the Queen and Maureen Lipman get their bras from (forgotten their name) if one could commission a 3 cup one? However, one would also need a personal couturier on hand to construct the outer garments to house such a marvel of engineering, and not cause alarm to the onlookers!

Hi Paul
This was a bit of a surprise for me too. I had been told the handset was bluetoothed to the pump, and as an Accu Chek user assumed that that meant that I could Bolus from the handset. I had also asked the rep if it was possible to Bolus via the handset, and was told it was. However, whilst the handset does send the BG to the pump that is all it does. If I can get everything else working correctly I will put up with this and see if it is too much of a hassle, and is outweighed by the automated deliveries.

Thanks for all the ideas. Plenty of things to try (eventually)

I think you just made my mind up to change from Meditronic and go with mylife YPSOpump and Dexcom6 sensors,
Their loop system which will be released early next year sounds like the leap Meditronic should have done with the 780. Even before the loop system starts to work you can bolus from your phone.
Prices are pretty much the same as Meditronic and Swiss made not American (sorry Americans) 2000’s design (I.E. a brick in your pocket or bra for that matter.
here’s a link for it, watch the video, I have a meeting with them in January to see how real their claims are

I would. I think I am too late now.

If you’re really not getting on with or liking your pump, don’t be afraid to ask if you can give it back @SB2015 especially as it’s a new model. You might remember I gave back my Insight because I hated it. It wasn’t a problem and the relief was absolutely massive.

Actually, I didn’t ask - I basically told them it wasn’t working for me and I couldn’t deal with 4 weeks of it, let alone 4 years. We have to wear the pump 24/7 and it needs to ‘fit’ for us.
