The NHS today banned GPs from sending patients to a hospital run by Britain?s biggest private medical firm.

BMI Mount Alvernia Hospital was forced to apologise after an alarming Care Quality Commission report warned serious failings were putting lives at risk.

Within hours, the local clinical commissioning group in Guildford, Surrey, acted ? the first time the NHS has imposed a block.

Inspectors had said Mount Alvernia failed on eight out of nine standards, including consent to care and treatment and cleanliness.
