Type 2
Hi
I was diagnosed type 2 at the beginning of May. It has been a real uphill struggle since then.
I am really struggling with my vision. My very expensive varifocals don’t work and I can see nothing without them.
I understand this is to do with high blood sugar, mine was 26 on diagnosis but is a lot lower now. Getting 7 point something with occasional higher readings over the weekend. I was hoping my vision would have improved bu5 if anything it has got worse. The doctor I saw I hospital said not to get new glasses as my eyes would change and the go back to normal. I have just rung my surgery to see if I can speak to a doctor to discuss how bad they are getting and to find out whether I should or can do anything about it. Although it is a massive surgery with about 15 doctors not one can speak to me in the next week!
I teach 5 year olds and had two weeks off and stupidly went back to work today and found it so hard. I am terrified this is going to take weeks to get better.
Can anyone please offer some advice about this?
Thanks
Caroline

Yes blurry vision happens when blood glucose is very high but also can happen when blood glucose reduces quite quickly. The environment in the eye changes from being 'sugary' when blood glucose was high back to the normal salty so the shape of the eye changes so vision can be blurry for a while. It should return to normal but can take some time, it depends on the individual how long. The temptation is to go to the optician but they should not give a new prescription at this stage.
I know how annoying it is as it happened to me when I cut my carb intake to 70g per day. It felt as if my eyes were in different heads for close vision, far vision was fine and yes an expensive varifocal prescription where you need a second mortgage.
I just put up with it but it was seven months before the vision became more normal, for some people it is only a few weeks.

Thanks for taking the time to reply. My doctor phoned me 10 minutes after I wrote this post (I think the receptionist must have spoken to her!) and suggested that I should go to the optician to check there is nothing else going on. She said it can take a while to improve so not to get glasses but wanted someone to look at my eyes. I have an appointment tomorrow.
She also signed me off work for the next two weeks. I am hoping my eyes may have improved slightly by then.
Thank you
Caroline

It may be an idea to get a pair of very cheap unifocal glasses to tide you over, if you can find them. I remember some people have done that.

Thank you for the replies. I saw an optician today and she said my eyes look healthy which is good. My vision has changed from -7 to -2 in one eye and -5 to -1 in the other eye so no wonder my glasses do not work. She said a change as big as that is certainly down to the glucose levels. She didn't recommend getting any glasses as it is possible they will change again next week and by the time they have arrived they wont work! I see where she is coming from so am just going to persevere. I am signed off work until 4th June so don't have to worry about reading for work.
Thanks
Caroline

Glad you were able to see your optician so promptly @Caroline1967

Hope your eyes settle down very soon. It’s a bit of a nuisance, and certainly not worth getting ‘proper’ glasses as things should gradually change over the coming weeks as the distortion of the shape of your eyeballs caused by osmotic pressure begins to normalise.

Reassuring to have had them checked though!
