Hi all - I am a newly diagnosed T2D - my HbA1c from a blood test 3 weeks ago was 116 and I have a lot of weight to lose. When I initially spoke to my GP 2 weeks ago, he put me on Metformin - 500mg initially to be titrated up to 4x500mg over 4 weeks. Just upped to 3 x500mg today.
GP told me to lose weight & increase exercise, which I have been trying to do - I can already feel a significant difference in my clothes.
I have noticed a change in my eyesight since I started making these changes - I'm in front of a computer screen all day & normally wear glasses for this as well as for reading. My sight is quite blurry at the moment - much more so than usual. I am seeing comments about eyesight in a few posts - am I right in thinking this is due to my blood sugar changing? Does anyone else have experience of this? Does it resolve itself and how long can this take? Any help welcome.

It’s normal for eyesight to change when you bring your blood sugars down. Don’t rush out to the opticians unless there’s something more concerning going on though as you should wait 3 months after blood sugars stabilise before buying new glasses.

Yes. High blood sugar causes the lens to change shape. My eyesight went blurry a few months before I was diagnosed, but returned back to its normal level when I got it under control.

I am also having problems with blurry eyesight and was struggling to read even with my normal varifocals prescription. I don't think I was told about this when I had my diabetes retinopathy check, which came back clear.
I did find out from the wise hive mind on this forum about changing blood sugar levels affecting eyesight. I decided to go to the opticians anyway as I was overdue a test. The idea was just to get reading glasses to tide me over till BG had stabilised. Fortunate that I went as my previous distance vision had deteriorated so much I failed the DVLA licence requirements. Had to wait for new driving glasses before I could drive again.
Please make sure you can pass the number plate reading test. I now have 2 pairs of specs in my bag. Hoping to get my BG stable by next year as I needed to reduce it a lot from my diagnosis in March this year.
Everyone is very individual in how their body deals with diabetes so I hope that you manage to stabilise your BG as soon as possible

My eyesight changed got new glasses, then was misdiagnosed with type 2 they changed again, another new pair. Finally found out type 1 eyesight now back to normal

on. I don't think I was told about this when I had my diabetes retinopathy check, which came back clear.
I wouldn’t expect them to tell you anything about eyesight, they’re just technicians trained to take the photos not diabetes experts.

Good to hear your eyesight is back to normal. Hoping mine will improve too, although I have the beginnings of a cataract in my left eye which is likely to need treatment in the next two years. Old age and decrepititus is such fun.....😱o_O:rofl:

Think took about 4 months after diagnosed with type . I’ve got start off cataract, hubby was at hospital yesterday getting his checked, needs done 6-8 months waiting time

This is quite normal. I had the same problem and at one stage I had to put my reading glasses on to watch TV. Now I don't need reading glasses at all. Once or twice I even got in the car and had driven halfway down the road before I realised that I didn't have my glasses on. My optician told me not to get new glasses until things settled down and told me to come back in 3 months.

My eyes got BETTER when i had high sugars...but then i am weird. Also its interestng cos this happened before, so my beta cells may have struggled previously then rallied...i did ask the optician at the time but they didn't know what could case eyesight to improve

The wait must depend on where you live as my other half had a check at his optician on a Wednesday, was referred and had the pre-op check the following Wed and the surgery on the Saturday so a bit of a whirlwind, with the second on done 5 weeks later.

It was only by reading on here that I had the explanation for why my vision went all over the place after 2 months of low carb and blood glucose levels dropping even though my starting levels was only 50. My far vision was fine but near was awful, my eyes didn't seem to be working together, it felt as if my eyes were in different heads is how I described it. It took several months to settle but It is much quicker for most people.

That’s quick, my hubby was referred in February by option, had 2 appointments cancelled

Yep - exactly that in Coventry - friend was diagnosed on a Thursday at Specsavers (?Earlsdon), had op the following Tues somewhere in Bell Green and was perfectly OK again by the Thursday the same week! Fresh eyetest approx 6 weeks later, new glasses, job done.

Sorry to hear about your blurry eyesight @MrsMonty

Hopefully as your body gets used to the improved BG levels, and your eyes return to their proper shape, along with your brain catching up with the changes your eyesight will clear up for you. 🙂

Thanks for this - another big nudge for me to get an opticians appointment! Had my retinopathy scans done last two years running with no problems (and I could read all the little numbers on the chart!) but reading has become more difficult than usual - time for a check up me thinks (haven't had one for years, since I had Opthalmic Shingles (Not a nice experience BTW!) - thanks for the reminder
