I have started to check my blood regulary (after 4 years of earache from the practice nurse) the thing is it can be goodish for days, then for no reason it just goes haywire and i loose interest and wonder what the point is, for example, on saturday my bloods were good all day, despite getting up late and not eating much. I checked my blood around 10 at night and it was 9.9 (not too bad for me) had a cuppa and chilled till midnight, tested again and it was 22.4 😱 needless to say i was pretty peed off when i saw it and again had a rant about it being bloody pointless! it never seems to just settle, one day it will be all high maybe around the twenties and the next im hitting hypos 4 or 5 times. im so fed up with it now, noone seems to give me an answer, just the usual food and exersize stuff.....been there, done that and still the same effect, surel after 4 years it should have at least settled a bit???? HELP!!!!

Perhaps your title should read blood sugars and not have a Y on the end.

Do you just see the practice nurse? if so ask for a transfer to a hospital clinic.
Have you done any basal testing and do you count carbs and adjust your insulin according to the results?
If no then perhaps start at the begining and sort your basal first then move onto your carb ratio 🙂

RE:Bloody sugars

I know, i was just playing with words 🙂 TBH if it wasnt for the primary nurse @ the health center id probably be dead by now!! was diagnosed in 2008, and didnt see a specialist till 2010 and again in 2012, had very little contact at the hospital with DSN either as they seem to keep forgetting to give me or pushing back appointments. when i enquire they tell me ive missed appointments, which i havent!!! needless to say its kinda frustrating at times. i brought my levimer down from 30 units to 20 @ night and my dinnertime novorapid from 30 to 20. i do adjust for smaller meals but it seems that whats ok for what i eat one day, doesnt work for the same thing the next. ive come close to launching my kit out the window but i guess that wont help lol

So have you actually tested your basal?
If not pop into the pump forum and read the pinned article. It's aimed at pumpers but works just as well for MDI
You might find after testing that you may need to split your basal.
A couple of books that would help you more are called think like a pancreas and using insulin. Both to be found on Amazon.
Have a look at the bdec course on line as well. It will help you to understand carb counting 🙂

🙂 thanks sue, ill have a look, when i suggested splitting my basal dose the sister just looked at me like 'stop clutching at straws' lol but i thought it would help coz levimer only works for 18-20 hrs (i think) so i have no coverage from approx 6pm onwards

lol @ leelee, its a pain in the backside!! incidently, my Y doesnt always work, hence the random M in the title 🙂

I think first off you definitely need to split your basal as you say.

On top of that the only way to tune your post meal readings is to carb count really, unless you eat the same things all the time - have you done any before?

done any carb counting? yes, i do count carbs but sometimes it can be hard to judge how many carbs are in fast food so it can be a guessing game. i try to eat the same stuff regularly just to rule it out, i always eat a sandwich with cheese and cold meat for lunch and a piece of fruit (boring i know) but still get weird flux in sugars at times. which tend to make me kick the covers off the pram and reach for the junk food. (i know it doesnt help) gonna try adjusting my basal dose probably gonna go for 10 units @ 10am and 10@ 10pm ish. anything is worth a shot now!! 🙂

laura, i see u use humalog and levimer. my mum uses humalog and lantus (12years) my nephew got novorapid and lantus (july 2008) i got novorapid and levimer (oct 2008) ive read that the combination i am on is not the best, should i suggest changing to lantus for more coverage? any thoughts?

I'm a Levimar and Novorapid guy, works well for me (but we are all different, adds to the diabetes challenge!). I split my Levimar 16u am and 8u pm, usually around 7.00am and the pm dose around 11.00pm.

I also need more NR with breakfast, so usually have 2u/10g CHO for breakfast and 1.5u/10g CHO for other meals.

As for fast food, I actually find that really easy at the big chains, they have usually got the Nutritional info or its all online, I just wip out my phone, pop along to their site and away I go, I've also asked and more often than not they have a file with it all in, McDonalds once went to the trouble of going to their website for me and getting the details as it was a promotional item so wasn't on the tray liner (I have a little laminated card in the car with the things I eat at McDonalds!)

Thanks rob, a 16/8 split might work better now i think of it. Mcd's website is a godsend. I guess ill just have to stop ordering pizza from the local take away, impossible to know how carby it is. Justeat.co.uk was the worst invention ever for me lol 🙂

this is what i mean (for anyone interested) a 3 month snapshot of my control, or lack of. note the loss of interest in testing when it starts to go haywire. 🙂150256_459859307393848_1995570959_n.jpg
