Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Can anybody help I've tested my blood at lunch time and it was 11.8. Then tested it again two minutes later and it was 10.5.
Does anybody have an opinion on the Free Style Libre tester please.

The standard for accuracy of all test meters is that they should be within 15% either way, so your two readings are within the allowed tolerances. Even if you were to test the same drop of blood twice, you are likely to get a different result, and the amount of glucose in your bloodstream is changing minute by minute in any case.

Thank you Robin.

The Libre doesn't test blood, it tests interstitial fluid instead. If you do a search for it on the forum - there are shedloads of threads about it.

In what way are you thinking of using the results from it?

Hi @trophywench . IMO this is a great piece of kit 🙂 , it can do both tests.
Hi @Alvin Nightingale . I use the Libre Freestyle, I don't use it to test my blood glucose though I use the sensors instead, which as Jenny said above tests the interstitial fluid. As BG meter it still has to conform to the tolerences governing meters so shouldn't be more than 15% out, going by the figures you've given above it is within that tolerance. you can test the same blob of blood using another test strip and their will be a slightly different reading.
IMO it is indeed a good piece of kit however Its accuracy is no better than other meters.
As said previously I don't use the test strips, I haven't checked the price of the test strips but guess they're not cheap to self fund

I know you are able to use it to it's full potential since you are using insulin so can adjust your doses accordingly - same as a Type 1 can - within the confines of MDI - which makes it and the ongoing sensors a worthwhile investment. We don't know whether Alvin is using insulin, arb counting and dose adjusting etc - so I was wondering - if he wasn't - whether it would be worthwhile? That's all !

I understand Jenny tbh I was thinking the same thing. Especially as they are not cheap to self fund.

Alvin the test meter will help...it will show you how what you eat affects your blood glucose...as long as you test before you eat and then two hours after eating...part of the problem is likely to be what you are eating now...rice...potatoes...bread and starchy vegetables need to be avoided as they are are likely to spike your BG's...some diabetics can tolerate sweet potato...others cannot...very much a case of trial & error...until you can find what your tolerance level is for the different foods...just wondering how long you have been diagnosed...whether you take medication...have you had much information from your GP or DSN on how to manage you diabetes...just a little bit more information will make it easier for others to offer the right support and assistance...it is difficult to grasp how to control/manage your BG initially...but with perseverance you will get there...it just takes time...no point in rushing...you need to do things at your own pace...one that's sustainable long term...what were your BG's at diagnosis...have you made much progress since then...why not tell us a little more about yourself.

Thank you for your time and advice.

Alvin - are you anaemic? Cos if you are, the normal 'long term' blood test they do (to see how much glucose has stuck to our red blood cells over the last 12-ish weeks, called the HbA1c test which they do at least annually, often more often to begin with) doesn't work properly.

However the pin prick ones we do with meters which just test how much glucose is in our blood at that exact millisecond, do work. And actually - so would the Libre. Have a read of the link I gave you anyway, cos as I said, it explains very well why you're doing it, and where you go from there.
