As just diagnosed type 2 have bought a home testing kit. Did a test first thing this morning no food or drink since last night 7pm result 8.2. Decided I wanted to see how porridge affects me so tested before I ate 8.7 ?? As I had eaten or had nothing to drink since the first test should it have risen? I am three months of diet and exercise to try and reduce my levels.

Yes, it can raise first thing in the morning. It's your body (liver) getting you up for the day by releasing some glucose for energy.

Did you test after your porridge? About 2 hours after gives the best result.

just tested two hours after eating porridge. was 8.7 before eating and 8.6 now. What does this show please?

On those readings you can eat porridge. Do test again just to allow for variations. Other things can affect you're BG, and you could get a different result on another day.

Also...don't fall into the trap of thinking that meters are super-accurate...they aren't. I've taken tests using different strips and the same sample and had results 1mmol/l different. 8.2 to 8.7 is within the normal range of variance. If in doubt, test again and take the average.

Looks good. I can tolerate porridge if I'm careful. If I close my eyes when eating it, I don't spike as much.:D
