Good afternoon guys a little advice please into blood sugar testing

should i test everyday before each meal and then every two hours after ??
as been advised by diabetic nurse just to test before breakfast and evening meal but not after should i to see what my sugars go up to and is that then a indicater as to what to eat ??
my sugars in the morning are around 6.8mml and then drop around to 5.7mml for lunch then around 6mml for dinner does sound about right
so should i test after eating (two hours after) and how much should it go up and how long does it take to come down ??
any advice or guidance will be appreciated
 
Those numbers are great for starters! If you test 2 hours after eating you shouldn’t have gone up by more than 3 mmol/l from where you were before eating, and it should come back down again within another 2 hours. If you have gone up by more then there’s something in that meal which you need to avoid. Unfortunately everyone is different so the only way to find out exactly what works for you is by testing.
 
Many members here find checking BG levels around food very helpful, until they have built up a picture of which food suit them and which their individual metabolism and gut biome are able to cope well with.

While there are obvious things like cakes, biscuits, sweets and sugary drinks that you will want to cut out straight away, it is really helpful to observe how much *all* carbohydrate affects your BG levels, including rice, pasta, potatoes, bread, pastry, grains, cereals and many fruits. The really tricky thing is that blood glucose responses to various foods are highly individual, and it can be impossible to say which types and amounts of carbohydrate will ‘spike’ your BG without checking what is happening for yourself.

Once you have discovered which foods, and which portions you cope well with, you can drop back to a much less frequent ’maintenance’ level, perhaps only checking on waking, and if eating something new.
 
A good reminder for some of us.
Someone mentioned the fact I had sweetcorn yesterday which isn’t good. Personally I’ve never found that it spikes me but potatoes? They are the devil’s own for me. They spike me more than anything else. Shame as a huge portion of my diet used to consist of potatoes.
