Hi all,


I was supposed to have a fasting blood test today, i have never had a problem giving blood. Today though the phlebomtimists could not draw any blood.
She tried twice in one arm and once in the opposite arm. All three times she found a good vein but no blood would flow. I have had to book in again for Monday which means another twelve hours fasting.
Anybody any ideas, experiences or advice for this situation? Look forward to hearing from you.

Hemase hi,
I have had this happen once it was the nurse who could not draw blood so I was referred on to the blood lady, 2 weeks later and she got the blood out straight away,did she not suggest maybe trying elsewhere on you, i once had blood taken from the back of the hand it did bruise bad but they was blood.
When you have the test on Monday be calm and relax, being in that situation can be stressy, are you ok with needles etc etc? x

I hate it when my veins dont play ball
 
From experience of both taking blood and giving various samples and donations over the years, I've found the key points to be:
(1) make sure you drink plenty so you are not dehydrated
(2) best to cycle to clinic - only time anyone had trouble getting blood out of me, I'd been at work for several hours
 
Thanks guys, not paticuarly fond of the idea of the back of my hand. I remember how badly my granddad used to bruise there. I have no problem with needles, like I say I have given plenty of samples in the last few years and never had a problem. Will have to wait and see what Monday brings I suppose.

As Copepod says - drink plenty of water before the appointment. Sometimes it's successful with me, other times it's not but I think that it's just me and my small veins - they have to use a child's thin needle to get blood most times - I never give anything away if I can help it !!! Good luck for next time.
 
I was told to drink water by the phlebotonist before going as we are dehydrated overnight and our veins shrink.

This was my last visit, and prior to that the Dr had said a sip only.

So perhaps water consumption may interfere with the reading.

Reading my reply, its a bit useless really isnt it?:D
