Woke up this morning, BG was 7.8 so thought this would be a good day for my blood test! having fasting and Hb1Ac

Off i popped to hospital i live about 25 mins away, got to the hospital, waited half hour in a queue to get into the carpark, just before i turned in i remembered that i hadn't brought my sform/plastic bag from the GP!. Off i went home again, still starving!, got the form went back waited another 1/2 hour to get a parking place...

Went in Pathlab took a ticket, waited about 20 mins - 1/2 hour to be seen, they tried my left arm, nothing, then they tried my right arm... nothing, left arm again, found a vein but when she put the needle in it had gone, called another person, she looked for a vein with the needle, moving it around for ages, then gave up, looked at the right arm again and said... " right im getting a flashback" (or something like that!) came back with a bigger needle, tried again with this nasty hurty needle, nothing, called a senior member of staff, she found a vein and got blood first time.

So both arms bruised and very sore and by the time i got out it was 11.45, took bloods and they were 6.4, no wonder i hadn't eaten since 6pm last night.

So will make apt to see GP next week.. will he say that i am within a normal range?

Your experience is terrible. Anything after 2 goes is an assault. I'd seriously consider making a complaint to the hospital.

I had a similar experience in the hospital. The idiot who tried to get blood was told he had one go. Then I made a big fuss and did it myself. (I'd done it before when Jenny the regular nurse in the weekly clinic I attended let me do it to satisfy my curiosity!)

I hope you feel not so sore soon.

Are you normally hard to get blood from? I'm not sure making a complaint is the right thing to do, it wasn't an emergency, at any time you can say leave it and try again another time.

Hope that you are happy with the results, let us know how it goes.

I'd see the doctor and tell him about he xperience too. Does your docotrs surgery have someone who comes in to do blood samples once a week? COuld try that next time

Hi, i wouldn't complain about todays tests, but the whole blood test system in stoke is a farse and i might complain about that, they have set up some clinics around stoke but there is a 3 week wait for a morning test! you can go and wait but the parking situation is awful.

Last time i went they didn't have trouble getting blood but it is more normal that they do.

Next time i will say from the start that i want to be seen by a senior member of staff.

thanks
Julie

oh that's nothing! you should have seen how many times they 'stuck' me when i went into hospital after being diagnosed.

I'm fairly easy to get blood from, but when I was in hospital they started running out of places to stick the needles and canulas because I had so many tests etc. My arms and legs were black and blue! The funny thing is, I must have looked a right state - seriously emaciated and covered in bruises - but the day after I was admitted and they had started feeding insulin into me I felt fitter than a family of fiddles! Some nurses and doctors were better than others at getting the blood. Personally, I don't know how they can do it, I'm not squeamish, but there is immense responsibility in sticking needles in people!😱
