Hi Miss Pickles, welcome to the forum 🙂 I'm afraid many doctors say you don't need to test and their motive is usually because the test strips are expensive. However, you won't know if your headaches are caused by high or low blood sugar levels without testing, so I'd suggest you try again to persuade the doctor. There's another very important reason to test and that is so that you can see how different food impacts on your blood sugar levels - by doing this you can determine what foods to avoid and which are OK. Diabetes UK have produced this to help you understand blood sugar testing and how to persuade your doctor to prescribe strips:

http://www.diabetes.org.uk/About_us/Our_Views/Care_recommendations/Self-monitoring_of_blood_glucose/

I would recommend looking at the 'Useful Links' thread in the Newbies section: http://www.diabetessupport.co.uk/boards/showthread.php?t=10406 for lots of good information. The more you know, the better you will be able to control your blood sugar levels and the better you will feel! 🙂 Particularly recommended for newly-diagnosed Type 2s is Type 2 Diabetes: The First Year by Gretchen Becker - it will really explain things well for you.

What tablets are you taking? It is more likely that your levels are high rather than low, given that you are fairly recently diagnosed, but if the problems persist, do go back to your doctor as he/she may need to adjust your medication - or it may not even be related to your diabetes.

Please feel free to ask any questions - nothing is considered 'silly'! 🙂

Welcome to the forum Miss Pickles 🙂 x

Hi Miss pickles and welcome 🙂

Hello and welcome to the forum.

Have you been back to the Dr and told him/her about the headaches and dizziness. They could be related to your diabetes or there could be another cause. Also check the patient information leaflet for the tablets you are on and see if the symptoms could be a side effect of the meds.

You could ask your Dr if you could have a HbA1C test - which will indicate what your blood sugars have been doing since December and that might trigger a change in meds or if its still high could be used by you as an added reason why you want to test to see what food does to you.

Hi pickly-miss and welcome from me too 🙂

My ghasts are constantly flabbered by the attitude of so-called healthcare professionals to testing blood sugar 😡
If you've got blood pressure issues, what do you do?
If you've got issues with your sight, what do you do?
If you've got issues with ...... you know where I'm going with this!

You MEASURE !!!!!

If you don't measure, you can't manage (full quote avail. on request).

If we can't rely on the health system to take T2 diabetes seriously, what are the chances of the media ever doing it?

Sorry pickles for ranting on your thread. Thankfully, you've come to the best place for real, unbiassed advice about how to care for your diabetes.
As Northerner has already said, get yourself a BG meter - insist that the GP either gives you one, or ask to be referred to your local diabetes specialist team.
You're not alone with this - you got US now 😱

G'day Miss Pickles.

I don't often say this.

Your doctor has not the faintest idea of how to properly treat a type 2 diabetic. If it is at all possible in your system please try to find a new doctor.

In the meantime the people here can advise you on the best way to obtain a meter and a supply of test strips. Then read this (click on it): Getting Started

Before you start following the suggestions in that please let us know what those pills are that you are taking three times a day.
