Hey all,
just a query about bsls during illness. Sorry if this has been mentioned before, i'm sure it has! today i've been feeling quite unwell with a bad sore throat and my sugars have been crazy. Started off like 14/12/10/14 kinds of numbers this morning and this afternoon and now theyre getting to the 18/20/22 sort of stage. I'm on a pump and i have been taking extra insulin but was just wondering is this caused by the sore throat? ketones were 0 this morning and have now just crept up to 0.4 which i know isn't bad. :D (i've had DKA before and they were 5.8 eeek!!) I'm talking blood ketones btw.
Many thanks.
love, luck and light

Hi

Can't help you with the ketones I'm afraid, my daughter has no pancreas and no ketones (or so we think).

However with illnesses and pumps, ideally you should have been given an idea of what to do ie sickness protocol.

What I find we have to do and others (but this is for children don't forget), you use the increase temp basal. Some children have to go up to 200%, some only 150%. Some go even higher than the 200 % but that gets complicated.

I started my daughter off slowly slowly ie 175% for 2 hours and see what happened and did it in 2 or 3 hourly increments.

If you have an infection, which you have your levels will bounce up to the high numbers and sometimes correction bolus' don't get them down, this is where the temp basal comes into its own.

(Some people but not you obviously, the levels actually go down with infection but this is the minority of people). The levels will generally be low for vomitting and diarhhoera (sorry can't spell that) and it can happen whilst the illness is brewing ie two days before etc.

Hope this helps and I hope you feel better soon. :(

Hi Eyeko,

I'd echo what Adrienne has said already. I tend to find that I need more long acting insulin so I suppose that the best thing for you to do would be to up your pump's basal rate. Don't ask me by how much to do that as I'm not on a pump and haven't a clue. Keep a close eye on your blood sugars for the next few days.

eyeko, are you just correcting or have you a temp basal running?
Also are you sure your site is ok and it doesn't need changing?
You really need to talk to your team. You should have been sick day rules and what to do with high nunbers.

I'm on tablets. My sugars tend to be higher when I am unwell. SInce I am under my GP for my diabetic care directly I feel ill and the numbers start rising I make an appointment and get something for it. If there are no appointments at the doctors I have yo check in with NHS direct or go to A&E just to make sure.
