Got my wife this blood glucose test....Gluconavi. The results before and 2 hours after are almost the sameThey were 5.5 before and 5.3 after. Is this normal.

Yes it's quite normal since both those readings are well within the accuracy standard of the meters sold in the UK.
But the situation can still occur even if both readings are perfectly accurate. It depends upon:
1). how good her insulin response is
2) Was the first reading possibly influenced by either 'dawn Phenomenon' or 'Foot On the Floor'
3). Were there any carbohydrates in that meal.

As an example I still have some dawn Phenomenon response, even though I have not eaten 'breakfast' for over 2 yrs. But back when I did I would often get a reading of between 7.8 and 8.0 before breakfast and then 2hrs after first bite it would be the same of lower than before eating (anything up to 0.5 lower than before eating).I was eating boiled eggs (zero carbs) for breakfast every day back then The food , even though there were no carbs signalled to my liver than it no longer needed to pump glucose into my bloodstream in order to give me the energy to hunt/gather my breakfast like a cave dweller.

That shows your body has handled the amount of carbohydrates you had for your meal very well. So it looks as if that meals was suitable but it is always worth repeating the test next time just to be sure then add that to the 'safe' meals.

Thanks for the quick replies. My wife has only just been diagnosed with diabetes and has been very worried and upset. This was one of her favourite meals, and it's great to know that her body has handled it so well.

Hi @Zautai and welcome to the forum and the world of blood glucose testing. As others have said, those readings are fine. My only comment is that it is a good idea to do more testing so that you can really find out what is going on. So, if you test again at the same times next time your wife eats the same meal, do not be surprised if you get different results. If you do, it does not mean that something is wrong, it just means that some of the other things that influence blood glucose have come into play.

I suggest you get a notebook (or start a spreadsheet if you are that way inclined) and start to record dates and times of results together with what has been eaten when you are testing around meals. What you can then do is look for patterns. My suggestion (other suggestions are available!) is that you test on waking and test around meals. What you are looking for is the waking reading to be 5, 6 or 7. When testing around meals you are looking for a rise of no more than 2, a couple of hours after eating, and in any case no readings in double figures.

My other suggestion is that in looking at individual results you ignore the number behind the decimal point. You cannot measure blood glucose to that accuracy on a hand held meter. That way you will use the meter for what it is very good at, that is looking for the big things, and not finish up fretting about details.

I'll add my usual caveat.... my comments apply to T2's using a meter to adjust their diet, using a meter as a T1 to adjust insulin dosing is a whole different ball game.

Welcome to the forum @Zautai

Glad your wife had such great numbers from one of her favourite meals. And great to know she has access to a meter - this should be really helpful in terms of actively managing her diabetes.

Lots of members find these blog posts very helpful in terms of using their BG meter to tweak their menu

Quite normal and a good result. What was on the menu?

Try some tests about an hour after her last bite of meals to see if those results are different.
