I’m confused (nothing strange there) and new to all this, if my hba1c is 50 and my finger prick test is around 5.5 most of the time certainly before I eat how does that relate to the 50 reading because my tester says my reading is normal.

I’m sure this has been discussed on here lots but I can’t seem to find it so sorry for the dumb question, I think I’m looking for reasons why don’t have type 2 diabetes and ways for it to go away the idea of waiting 3 months for a blood test to say diet changes have made no difference is messing with my head. How you guys cope with it leaves me speechless I’m in awe.
 
It is all very confusing, particularly at first. So, your FP reading is a snapshot of that moment, your Hba1c a 3 month window into your blood sugar.

An Hba1c of under 42 is 'normal'. 42-47 is pre-diabetic and 47+, diabetic. So with an Hba1C of 50 you are diabetic albeit at the low end. To put that into context, I was completely unaware I was diabetic - no symptoms really at all - and my Hba1c was 121!

The reason you have to wait three months between Hba1c readings is that is how long the haemoglobin 'lives' for so you need to wait for a complete cycle so to speak to see what difference any changes have made. Yes it is frustrating however at a level of 50 you should be able to, with a change in diet and maybe some exercise, reverse things pretty quickly. Note though that managing diabetes takes time and patience - there are no quick fixes.

Keeping your FP readings between 5 & 7 though mean that you are controlling your BG well and that bodes well for your next Hba1c test...
 
As above no direct comparison as they are measuring different things, one a psot chcek and one a three month average (sort of). But there is a chart which can be used as a "guide" even though I think its not 100% accurate, see attached....
Plus, bear in mind that your BG goes up and down throughout the day, as its affected by many things, food, exercise, stress, time of day, what you are doing, etc, etc....see attached list.
