Blood ketone strips

Just noticed someone on Facebook complaining because they were only able to get one box of blood ketone strips on prescription and another person suggested that wouldn't even last a day when the person (in this case a child) is ill. I have the strips but have never used them - would you really use more than 10 strips to determine whether you needed assistance?
 
No, I can't imagine needing more than one box. I have just had some go out of date which is such a waste.
 
I'm quite aware of the cost of my diabetes. In France I get a summary of what has been paid out evey couple of months.I use a pump and it's a lot of money and I've become very concious about wasting resources

I got offered a new monitor and prescription for ketone strips when I went onto the pump. I said no, I prefer the data from my One touch meter and I rarely have very high glucose readings. Other people on the course though were different and had had frequent episodes of DKA, for them it would be more important..
I have urine strips on prescription and I only use a few of them before they go out of date. If I had really high ketones that weren't dropping in spite of using extra insulin I would contact the hospital, I can't imagine why you would need 10 strips to get to this point.

Hmmm that is a bit odd....

However, if on a pump and bloods were high, yes i would be checking hourly for ketones as advised, i guess you would try and stay at home as much as possible so keep testing...Another thought would be if there was an admission into hospital i would definitely take ketone strips with me as they don't use them (more likely to be urine strips) so would want them there.

Saying that, when Rose was last ill we used a box over a 2-3 days as she was fluctuating between 2.6 and 0.0 ketones,
