Been generally poorly for about four days and this included having pain in my lower stomach which has moved to my left side and lower back too.

Haven’t been too concerned as I haven’t had a fever, had regular bowel movements and been able to pee normally.

Thought I’d ring the GP though as I’m still experiencing pain. I dropped in a urine sample.

Nurse called to say that I had blood in my urine after she dipped the sample but would I drop another one in in 2 weeks time and then a further 2 weeks after that.

Bit annoyed though as she was very abrupt and rude with me because I queried a few things that didn’t match what the doctor said.

She said he may call me or may not. So do I just put up with the pain for 4 more weeks until these samples are handed in?

I’m so furious the way the spoke to me I’m tempted to call up and complain.

I wouldn’t put up with pain for 4 weeks. Did the nurse give you any diagnosis? Does she know you’re in pain?

If you feel you’ve been poorly treated, do consider speaking to the Practice Manager. It doesn’t have to be an official complaint. You can, for example, make your feelings known and ask for further medical info if you need it. I’ve had occasion to speak to the Practice Manager before and it does help. Keep polite, calm and factual, and write notes about what you want to say before you call.

I expressed my concern that I was in pain and I was under the impression the GP would call me back but her words were “well I can see on the screen you have spoke to a doctor he may contact you again”.

All she said about the blood that was found is that it could be many things or even a slight infection which is why we will retest in two weeks and then a further two weeks.

Surely if it was just an infection they wouldn’t want to leave me for another two weeks to deteriorate?

If they think it’s an infection, surely they could test for it? They do seem rather disinterested. I’d give them another call (make sure you ask not to be put through to that nurse) if the pain is no better. Sometimes you have to push a little, I’ve found.

Over the last 6 months I have been growing frustrated with my surgery. It’s always one thing or another.

I’ll call them up tomorrow morning and see if I can speak to someone.

How do you feel today?
If you’re still in pain then call 111 and talk them through the symptoms. They may suggest a trip to A&E or a minor injuries unit perhaps.

Personally if there was blood in my urine I’d be rather insistent on testing to know why. I’d not be happy to wait for the practice manager to get back to me without letting me know what’s going on.

Afternoon, I feel about the same and hardly got any sleep.

Ive rang this morning and explained the situation and how the nurse spoke to me when she called.

Found out she failed to give me all of the correct information as apparently the doctor sent my sample to the lab to be tested and issued me some antibiotics and the prescription was sent straight to the pharmacy.

No one told me this and if I hadn’t of rang I wouldn’t of known.

The doctor also left a message on record that if symptoms persist to ring back.

Thank god you rang them this morning.
I do hope the doc you spoke to takes note of your bad experience with the nurse and deals with it.

He did say he would raise my concerns.

Anyone know when my antibiotics might start working?

Slightly concerned with a weekend approaching.

What were you prescribed? Dosage?

Something like amoxicillin takes next to no time to reach active levels. I think it’s well under an hour. But symptoms may not start to ease for a few days after starting.

Not that you wouldn’t but it’s also important to complete the course too don’t forget.

Sorry to hear you have been poorly @MarkGeordie

Thank goodness you chased up after the initial conversation with the nurse.

Hope the ABs kick in soon and things begin to improve for you early next week.

Thanks. Actually seen an improvement today. Got another two days worth to take, hopefully that sorts it out.

Going to have to call the doctor again tomorrow. Still in pain and it’s my last tablet this evening.

I imagine you had a kidney stone that made a break for freedom and got stuck in your ureter.
(Pipe between kidney and bladder). Classic loin to groin pain and dipstick haematuria.

If there is a superimposed infection upstream from the stone this is serious. This is especially true in diabetics and in particular, women. Diabetics don't seem to present with fever or the classic signs as much.

If you have not gone to a&e go.

Natural disclaimer that my advice does not constitute a medical consult as I've not actually seen you.
