If you think the mundane British offering looks droolworthy, if you have a passport you could nip over to France and embark on an odyssey visiting every patisserie shop. I doubt you'd find every single one, in a lifetime!

Sometimes though - their names and reputations are not matched by their taste and enjoyment - unlike the St H as described above - which in truth we've very rarely spotted in France and we've been going there on and off for over 30 years.

There is an individual cake called the Religieux - ie religious. Allegedly, since once you taste it - you think you've died and gone to Heaven!

What a disappointment that was. Looks delicious enough, puffy choux pastry topped with either chocolate or coffee soft icing, possibly piped with a 'star' pipe depending on the shop. Mega sweet icing - certainly coloured to resemble either of the things, but not flavoured at all, light enough choux with a lot of space and very very little whipped cream, also plain. So bloody bland tasting, it's practically insipid.

I said to Pete, perhaps you go to Heaven by chucking yourself off a cliff out of sheer disappointment? but he thought you'd be bound for Hell or at least No Man's Land,if you did that ...... :D

Have you been to France as early as May? We were somewhere on the Rhone, and all the patisseries were absolutely stuffed with St. Honorés, so much so that I asked our guide if it was a local speciality. He said no, it's Parisian, but it was some special day, (like Mother's Day, it was a Sunday, and everyone was pouring out of church straight into the patisseries, as you do on a feast day) and he said it was a Mother's day thing. I was looking in all the windows and drooling! I had to make do with a photo, though, as we didn't stop long enough to dive in!

If my other half has a naughty dessert he is willing to let me sample it so I don't feel deprived.

Don't forget that @Mark Parrott has created lots of low(er) carb alternatives to a lot of these top treats - have a browse in the recipes section 🙂 I think there may even have been a BFG (not a Big Friendly Giant 😉)

Been in May several times but haven't noticed. That's good though, €13 for a 9-portion one, even though the sponge cake on the bottom looks a tad thick - but there again probably makes it easier to pick up and eat whereas 'my' one always needed a plate or the box they put them in in the shop, and a spoon!

That looks too pretty to eat. 🙂

Funny you should say that. We used to have an absolutely fab Viennese patisserie near our office where you could buy individual slices of their huge 'catering' gattox there and then, or order any size up to 36pn for 2 days hence. Long time ago and individual slices were each approx. £1.20 at the time whereas in any old bakery shop a 'normal' sort of individual creamcake would cost around a £1. An 8, 12 or 16 portion Druckers' gateau cost 8, 12 or 16 times £1.20 - but as they got bigger, they became proportionally cheaper. The next size up - 24 portions - cost just £20. There were 18 people in our office so my birthday would cost me £18 minimum anyway - so they had a treat - a slice off a huge Gateau St Honore - always much, much more fresh cream than cake - with fresh strawberries (chopped in the cream and one whole one on top of each portion just inside the cream filled profiterole) to boot - so far far easier for yours truly to bolus for too!

I'm salivating now ........ roll on 4pm - two more F cream eclairs in the fridge!
Oh stop it! You are making me want what I can't have.....but on the other hand a chocolate eclair is OK.....isn't isn't @Northerner? Take care

Chocolate eclairs are relatively low in carbs for an occasional treat, plus the cream helps to slow the digestion and impact on blood sugar levels. I'd say it was worth an experiment and testing to see how you tolerate them 🙂

Oh of course, I will experiment with eclairs until I know for sure.....it may take an attempt or two! 😉:D I can't believe how excited I am that I can have something like that.....I thought I was looking forward to a life of salad and cabbage from now on LOL.

I've been reading over on the recipes pages and there's some scrummy looking stuff on there that I can't wait to try.....one thing I did want to ask about though is yoghurts (excuse the spelling if it's wrong 🙂) I'm really not sure where the land lies on this and I do really like them as a treat after a meal......is there a "good" option?

Some people go for unsweetened yoghurt with frozen berries and/or nuts 🙂 I quite like Skyr 🙂
